The Connection Week 11 Term 1

Huapai District School 15th April 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

We started our final week with our usual school assembly highlighting sportsmanship and fair play, all being part of the best you can be. It is so good to see students choosing to operate “on the front foot”, choosing to make a difference, choosing to demonstrate at their best. This is a great quality to our school. We can see good things happening.

Our school term concludes tomorrow - we will finish at the normal time of 3.00pm. Over the break we have considerable work underway including the beginning of the repainting of the school, installation of bag racks for Rooms 6 - 10, and some general maintenance on drains and grounds. Our staff will be back in the second week for some professional development work.

Just to remind parents, I have gained a sabbatical leave / study grant, this will mean Keryn Annan and Maree Lloyd will be the primary contacts for key leadership issues. I will remain in touch with the school and return should there be any critical issues or significant moments.

I trust you have a chance to get a break with your children.

Please note we will be running a holiday programme through our Huapai Plus team.

Regards,

John Petrie

Personnel Changes

We are really excited and also more than a little sad to inform parents that our precious Ana Taione will be leaving our school at the end of Term 2. Ana has been offered a position where a key part of her passions lie, that is helping Maori and pasifika families with their children engage with schools. This is a fantastic opportunity for Ana and one that we totally support. Her input and mana in our school is huge and significant. However, the bigger picture remains and we will always support our staff to pursue passion and giftings. We will begin the process of finding a teacher for the year 7 & 8’s over this coming term.

Student Of The Week

Mason says “Huapai is so cool. I love it because we get to do different things like building and helping around school. My favourite thing to do is play with my friends."

HDS Breakfast Club

Breakfast club is up and running. This is to give children an opportunity to meet and make new friends. We provide the children with a breakfast of cereal and milk, bread and spreads (margarine, honey, peanut butter and vegemite). All food will be provided by the school.

Please speak to your children about this, and let us know if your child/children are interested in being part of it. We will require you to give permission via KINDO, and notify us of ANY allergies or special food requirements your child might have.

No child can attend the breakfast club until consent has been given on KINDO.

The breakfast club runs from 8.30am each morning for approximately 20 minutes in Studio 2.

If you would like to be part of the team and could roster on one morning to help serve the children, that would also be much appreciated.

Please email stacey.wheeler@hds.school.nz for more information.

Big picture

St John Mufti Day Fundraiser

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to you all for your support of our St John mufti day fundraiser last Friday. Together we raised $601.20 for this worthwhile charitable organisation.

A special thank you goes to Room 10, the winner of the ASB St John Ambulance Lego set, for their incredible class collection of over $90.00.

Thank you also to everyone who joined in on the extra activities our Student Council held to promote last week’s St John Heart of Gold appeal. Congratulations go to Kianu (St8), Layla (R3), Ruby (St8) and Estelle (St6a) for their amazing creativity in our colouring competition, and to August (St7), Arabella (R7), Shohan (R7), Avei (St7), Sophie (R3) and Laylah (R3) for their great sleuthing in our Heart of Gold scavenger hunt.

Athletics Days

This year we have moved athletics to Term 2. This is for two reasons. 1) To reduce the sun exposure for our students as there is limited shade and 2) to hopefully free up time in Term 4 to run a school triathlon. The dates for athletics are:

Seniors years 5-8 Monday 10th May at the Huapai Domain and Juniors (years 1-4) Tuesday 11th May here at school. The rain dates for these events are the Monday and Tuesday of the following week. If we are unable to hold the athletic days in Term 2, we will look to run them in Term 4.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Thank you for your support this term with our HFN icepops fundraising project. We have raised over $1300 to support students with Wider Opportunities (eg camps etc). Next term we are looking to hold a community Quiz night - time to start gathering your favourite people and think up a fabulous team name. We are VERY keen to have a group of parents work with the school to organise this. If you have any ideas or are able to help with any aspect of a quiz, could you please email Katie Lean: katie.lean@hds.school.nz

PB4L Mufti Days

As part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) system here at school, students earn stickers for showing "The Huapai Way". These stickers are given for positive behaviour shown at school and these are added to their personal certificate. When a certificate is complete, the student brings it to the principal to be signed off and it is recorded on their school profile. Once a class has completed a set number of certificates, the class gains a reward. Once the school has completed a set number of certificates, a whole school reward is gained.

This year we have added a House aspect to this system. All students at school are members of one of four houses - Moananui (blue), Ngahere (green), Huawhenua (red) or Akaroa (purple). When a student brings their completed certificate to the principal, they now receive a ping pong ball to add to the house collection. Huawhenua house has earned their house reward of a mufti day earlier this week and we are set to celebrate Akaroa, Moananui and Ngahere today!

Year 1 & 2 Netball

We have a few places available in our year 1 & 2 netball team. This is a 4 aside competition played on Saturday mornings at Ruatawhiri Park Helensville. Please contact maree.lloyd@hds.school.nz if your son or daughter is keen to play.

Poppies At The Country Club

Some of our year 5 & 6 students have been working with members of the Huapai Country Club retirement home to create Poppies in preparation for ANZAC Day. These have now been ‘planted’ and we invite you to pop over to the Country Club and view the display outside.
