Peters Canyon Weekly Update
Summer 2020
Message From Dr. Andre
Welcome Back to School, Peters Canyon Families!
This is Dr. Andre, your new principal, and I am so excited to be joining all of you. Please take a moment to watch with your child the video above to "meet me."
The new school year is just about here, and the Peters Canyon staff and teachers are already working hard to make this coming 2020-2021 school year a success. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and kindness as we navigate this year together.
The year 2020 began with so many uncertainties and fears, and as we head into Distance Learning, you and your child(ren) may have different feelings towards coming back to school. Whatever you or your child is feeling - it is normal. As the school year gets closer, continue to talk to your child about how they are feeling. One of my favorite quotes from Marc Brackett, Director of the Yale Center of Emotional Intelligence, is, "If you can name it, then you can tame it." Allow your child to say that they are nervous, scared, or excited. If they have ______ feelings, then identifying the feeling will allow you to better pick the tools to use to support your child. For more information and resources, check out our parent Social Emotional Learning website, Listening From the Heart.
Our teachers are working tirelessly as we pivot into new systems and curriculum. They are SO excited to see their new students and experience a great year together!
Continue to stay healthy and take care of yourself and others. Remind yourself that everything we are experiencing is unprecedented, so we can all give ourselves some grace. Schedule in some family fun. We all need it.
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you!
Kristy Andre

Annual Data Confirmation DUE NOW!
ALL STUDENTS need data confirmation completed before school starts. This is done through the Parent Portal on a tablet or computer, not a phone. You need to verify we have correct phone numbers, emails, emergency contacts (must have at least 3) and important information, including the school lunch application. This must be completed before August 13. If you need computer access, call 714-730-7528 for an appointment.
Now more than ever, we are sending necessary important information. Things change daily in these times and we need to get a hold of you. All communication going home will be through email and text, so please make sure your information is up-to-date.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT | AUGUST 12th
Please note: our Back to School Night will be Wednesday, August 12th. This is the night before school starts. The purpose of this is to acquaint yourself with your student's teacher and to hear about the changes, procedures and expectations for Distance Learning in order to set up all of our students for success!
Back to School Night presentations will take place on Google Meet (links will be sent out beforehand to classes) at the following times:
TK/K/1 - 5:00 & 5:30
2/3 – 5:30 & 6:00
4/5 - 6:00 & 6:30
Distance Learning
TUSD is beginning the 2020-2021 school year with Distance Learning. It is important to note that this will look quite different from Distance Learning in Spring 2020. Some notable changes:
- Attendance will be taken daily by teachers
- Students will have daily, live instruction from teachers
- Grades will be issued on report cards
- TUSD will be utilizing the Schoology platform and Florida Virtual School curriculum (more information coming!)
- Students will be organized into AM or PM learning groups within classes for both Google Meets and when school resumes in person (see schedule below). Information on your child's session will be coming soon!
Is My Student in the AM or PM Distance Learning Session?
You will receive an email through Aeries communication on Monday, 8/3, as well as a letter mailed to you regarding placement in either the AM or PM learning session. A preference survey was sent via email to all families on both July 22nd and July 24th and we have tried to accommodate as many requests as we can, while still taking into consideration all other placement criteria, including keeping siblings in the same learning session times.
Please note that the learning sessions are the times when your student will receive live instruction and feedback from their teacher. Additional schoolwork will be assigned each day outside of their session time.
You will be able to see your child's teacher by logging on to Aeries Parent Portal after 4:00pm on Wednesday, August 12th.
Suggested School Supplies
As the new school year approaches, you may want to stock up on these suggested school supplies. This list is meant to support learning at home and also to bring to school once we return, since students will not be sharing.
See below or click HERE.
CDC Childcare
CDC is open and offering childcare on campus to accommodate Distance Learning. For rates, availability and program details, contact them at (714) 731-1779.
We are here for you!
Please make sure you REGULARLY check your email for updates!
Are you (or your friends) not regularly receiving emails? MAKE SURE to check your Aeries Parent Portal!
1)Go to your parent portal CONTACT SCREEN and assign each contact "general and emergency" or "emergency only."
2) Be sure in every contact's screen, you have entered a cell # and email.
3)Any person you assign "general and emergency" will receive ALL school communication such as Friday Principal eNewsletters and automated telephone communication. This change also allows you to select the type of communication you prefer: email, phone, text, or all three if you prefer. *The "type" of communication you select must have a corresponding cell, email address, etc. entered.
