eFlyer - Vanguard IB News & Information

Back by popular demand ... our Vanguard IB eFlyer!

Many of you asked if I would be sending them out again this year; you liked that they were helpful for sharing important information, and noted it was fun and interesting to read what our IB students and teachers were doing in the classroom and community. It was a little much to roll them out every single month, so this year I'm going to try to get them to you at least once a quarter. Our eFlyers will be both a mix of recaps and reflection as well as things to look forward to. Feel free to email our IB office with any questions you have. Happy reading! ~Mrs. D.

Welcome Mrs. Shaw to the IB Office

In case you hadn't heard, Mrs. Antonucci is now our VHS IPC.

We were sad to see her move up to the admin hallway, but we're happy to welcome Mrs. Shaw to the IB Office. Come by and say hi, turn your volunteer service hours in to her, or ask her for a transcript. She's already learning the ropes and she's ready to help students any way she can! You can also email her at michelle.shaw@marion.k12.fl.us.

Monthly Learner Profile Focus

Each month throughout the year, we focus on a specific IB Learner Profile trait.

This may be a lesson in class highlighting a character from literature or a person in history who lived that trait in a major way or it might happen organically in a classroom during an activity in real time. We also like to celebrate our students who go above and beyond and truly exemplify one of the ten characteristics we hope to grow and develop in our IB students.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized by their IB Teachers:

August - Risk Takers - IB Freshmen Kylin Carter, James Kearin, and Uzair Saeed

September - Inquirer - IB Sophomore Grace Hankinson

October - Balanced - ???

Congratulations National Merit Semi-Finalists

Vanguard IB is thrilled to have the Fab Five as this year's National Merit Semi-Finalists:

How Can I Help?

Many of you have asked how you can help our program or what you can do to be more involved. We love the enthusiasm you have shown in supporting the Vanguard IB Family!

We welcome you to celebrate Socktober and to contribute to the Outdoor Classroom Project.

Read more below and learn how YOU can make an impact locally and globally:

SOCKTOBER

Our fourth annual Socktober event kicked off Tuesday, October 1st. This year, we are selling funky socks for Angel, a six year old student in Uganda who loves to sing and has a pet rabbit. The proceeds will pay for her tuition, her school uniform, her breakfast and lunch daily, and a portion of her teacher's salary. Angel's photo is below. Our goal is 252 packs of socks sold.

Each pack of socks includes three themed pairs, and for every pack we sell, we also receive a pair of thick, warm socks to donate to a local homeless shelter or charity of our choice.

**UPDATE** Angel sent us a thank you video, which is posted below her picture!

There are two ways to purchase these funky socks:

Outdoor Classroom Project

IB Senior Conrad Hellwege has designed an outdoor classroom to be constructed at Vanguard, which will include space for 30+ students to enjoy lessons, activities, and club meetings, but also will include a memorial plaque dedicated to the three Vanguard students who lost their lives during the 2017-2018 school year. Conrad has been granted approval to seek out support for funding, and his donation letter is linked directly below.
