The Seedling

"All the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today."

Maintenance Tips from REAL School Gardens

December
  • Harvest all vegetables before Holiday Break
  • Clean garden tools
  • Continue adding organic materials to compost and turn to enable decomposition
  • Mulch heavily (~2-3”) around plants to protect them from the cold
  • Watch for bags of leaves on street curbs to add to compost bins and to use as mulch on beds

January
  • Remove Bermuda grass, nut grass, other weeds, and last season’s vegetables
  • Garden should be fertilized and then spaded thoroughly to a depth of 6-8”
  • Add soil and compost as necessary (if soil levels look low, add more compost)
  • Rake planting beds smooth for transplants and seeds
  • Continue adding organic materials to compost and turn to enable decomposition
