June Family Conferences

We are looking forward to meeting with you all at the end of the school year to reflect on your child's growth.

Please use the following link to sign up for a conference time.

We will meet with families on Thursday June 18th and Friday June 19th.

Please note that these will be half days with a 12:00 dismissal.

Compass Library Book Return

Next week will be the last week of book shopping at Compass. It is the end of the year so we need to inventory the Compass Library. Students will return all Compass books to the library on Friday, June 19th.

Please look through your home, car, backpacks, etc for any books that belong to the school and bring them back.

Your child can keep their book baggies as a reminder of their first grade reading. We will make brand new bags next year.

Whitney Trip

We experienced the new Whitney building this week. First graders got to discuss art connected to our community, New York City. They looked for lines, shapes, and curves throughout the paintings.

Thank you grown-ups who joined us on this trip.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

We had a great day in this public space! Students observed the many ways the park is constructed for people to enjoy and share.

We also took time to enjoy it ourselves. We got really wet!

This week Elm students got a chance to show teachers how much they learned during ourTwo, Fives, and Tens unit. We saw so much growth! Ask your child to help you solve problems involving doubles or to solve two digit by two digit addition and subtraction problems with multiples of 10.

This was our last week of publishing our fiction stories. Elms were SUPER committed to getting their books in the class library. Students added color to their illustrations, came up with a title for their books, and designed a cover page. Some students chose to re-write or trace their work using Flair Pens to make the book have a special look. We are going to share these fabulous stories with each other next week and with families during conferences :).

Integrated Project Time

This week students chose to work in the community. We got to get our hands dirty in the school garden, visit with senior citizens at The Phoenix Center, and work on mapping the community. Students in each group shared with one another. On Friday, we chose a focus topic for our final outreach project of first grade.

This week we opened up a clay center and put soil into the sensory table.

First graders continued their clay exploration and planted seeds that we can move into the school garden when they start to grow.
