Explaining Fusion Reading
We are at the point in the school year, when administrators, facilitators, and a host of other people, including your ICT, will be visiting your Fusion Reading classroom. This month you will meet with parents to explain Fusion Reading, their child’s reading level, and strategies to ensure academic growth. Not much pressure for one month at all!
Included in this newsletter are talking points for each part of the Fusion Reading lesson to assist in answering the inevitable question, “So, just how is Fusion going to help your students become better readers?”
Thinking Reading
Thinking Reading is a structured process in which the teacher demonstrates the reading behaviors expert readers use while reading. It also provides the opportunity for students to practice reading in a safe and supportive environment. The purpose of Thinking Reading is to engage the struggling reader in the reading and thinking processes.
In Thinking Reading, the teacher reads and models the behaviors of good readers and uses meta-cognitive strategies to gain an understanding of the text. The goal of Thinking Reading is to transition from teacher led to students practicing good reading strategies.
Talking Points
Thinking Reading. . .
· engages struggling readers in reading and thinking processes
· introduces novice readers to models of expert readers (SEE & HEAR reading)
· provides a safe & supportive environment for students to practice reading
· provides and "eyes on the page" experience for students
· teaches students a love of reading
Fusion Reading Direct Instruction Stategies
During the daily direct instruction of every Fusion Reading instructional lesson, students learn the skills and strategies needed to improve reading skills and generalize these skills into their content area classes. The strategies in Fusion Reading are:
· The Prediction Strategy, a reading strategy that teaches students to make predictions prior to and during reading the process. Predictions help good readers understand and make connections when reading.
· Possible Selves for Readers, a motivational unit that helps students learn the connection between becoming an expert reader and the impact reading plays in their personal goals for the future.
· The Bridging Strategy, a reading strategy that teaches students how to phonetically pronounce multi-syllabic words.
· The Summarization Strategy, a reading strategy that teaches students to summarize what they have read.
· Strategy Integration, instruction on how to use reading strategies together and practice generalizing what they have learned to core content material.
· The PASS Strategy, a strategy a student uses when taking tests and state assessments.
The 7 Step Vocabulary Process
Reading comprehension is dependent on the meaning readers give words. The more vocabulary words students know, the better able they are to comprehend text. A larger vocabulary provides access to a wider range of reading material.
The purpose of the Fusion Reading Vocabulary process is to teach students ways to discover the meaning of unknown words. When readers have a process to negotiate word meaning, comprehension improves. The vocabulary process teaches students to analyze the meaning of words by examining the word’s root, prefix, and suffix. Examining word parts in multi-syllabic words is a skill good reader’s use.
Fusion Reading is on Facebook!
Mike, Irma, and Sue have created a Fusion Reading page on Facebook! The Fusion Reading Facebook page was developed as support for all Fusion Reading teachers. The hope is to provide a community where teachers can connect with other Fusion Reading teachers.
Everyone is encouraged to add comments and pictures of your Fusion Reading classroom. Additionally, you can ask a private question through Messenger and receive a response from Mike, Irma, or Sue! Search FUSION Reading on Facebook and you will be able to locate the page.
