Over-Fishing

Human Dependence Project

What are the isssues with over-fishing?

Catching too much fish for the system to support leads to an overall degradation to the system. Overfishing is a non-sustainable use of the oceans.

Negative Effects

  • We are losing species as well as entire ecosystems. As a result the overall ecological unity of our oceans are under stress and at risk of collapse.
  • We are in risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons.
  • Main Regions

North-Eastern coast of Canada & Pacific coast of Mexico

what wildlife is most affected by over-fishing?

More than 85 percent of the world's fisheries have been pushed to or beyond their biological limits and are in need of strict management plans to restore them.

    how is this wildlife affected?

Many fishers are aware of the need to safeguard fish populations and the marine environment, however illegal fishing and other regulatory problems still exist. WWF works with stakeholders to reform fisheries management globally, focusing on sustainable practices that conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.

Over-fishing does not affect us in league city. I feel as if it could because we are surrounded by water.

    Are People affected by over-fishing?

Yes, people buy fish that can be contaminated by the ocean's dirty ways. Fish (seafood) is a very popular food, yet still can be dangerous.

Who or what is the cause of over-fishing?

We, humans, are the cause of over-fishing. We pollute the water with oils and trash, when we could just find a trash can. So, we, humans, cause over-fishing.

    Solutions

A new study indicates that "co-management" -- a collaborative arrangement between local communities, conservation groups, and governments -- provides one solution to a vexing global problem: overfishing.

    My own solutions

If we were to transport oil in cars instead of boats, or if we were to put more trash cans at the beach. And make it illegal to litter, and put cameras to know who to fine.
