Gods and Generals Film Overview & Chacter Analysis

Film Overview:

Director Ron Maxwell and producer Ted Turner return to the glory and tragedy of the Civil War in this historical drama, which examines the early days of the conflict through the experiences of three men. Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain left behind a quiet life and a career as a college professor to become one of the Union's greatest military minds. Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang) was, like Chamberlain, a man of great religious faith who served in the defense of the Confederacy. And Gen. Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate army, was a man who was forced to choose between his loyalty to the United States and his love of the Southern states where he was born and raised.

In January 1865, US President Abraham Lincoln has just started his second term in office. However, the country is in turmoil with the Civil War entering its fourth year and having taken the lives of many a soldier on both sides. Lincoln believes that passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution - which would abolish slavery - would most importantly end the war. The Amendment has already passed in the Senate, and is scheduled for vote in the House of Representatives at the end of the month. While he is assured of yes votes from his fellow Republicans, he and his team have to work hard behind the scenes to assure enough yes votes from Democrats, which may require some compromise in other areas. But other factors may also come into play on the vote, such as the Confederate forces in the war issuing their own compromise to end the war but keep slavery. Personal Take Away

My personal takeaway from these films have taught me a lot about the Civil War. These films have taught me about to main parts of the war and also all the way to Lincoln's assassination. I didn't know about the battles at Ft. Wagner or at Little Round Top until we watched these films. They have also taught me the importance of being one united nation is way more powerful than being two separate ones with two different beliefs and thoughts both fighting for what they wanted.
