Bio-science Careers: Dietitian

Emma Cordes

Dietitian Job Outline

If you have an interest in people, food, health, and science... a career as a dietitian may be well-suited for you. As a dietitian, you'll relay scientific information into practical advice to encourage others to make health-conscious decisions about the food they consume. Not only this, but being a dietitian means you'll have the opportunity to assess, diagnose, and treat diet-related issues others may be having.

Level of Education

Dietitians must hold at least a bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutrition, or another health science field. If you're wanting to advance further, you may pursue a graduate's degree. For certain degrees, the courses you decide to take must be approved by the Health & Care Professions Council to ensure that you're getting the best education for your career.

Necessary Skills

Basic knowledge of nutritional habits and healthy foods is only one aspect of what it takes to be a successful dietitian. Talking with people, whether one-on-one or in groups, requires that you must have substantial communication and active listening skills. Being friendly and approachable is a must, as for many, eating habits can be a delicate subject. Thriving as a dietitian not only demands that you are well-educated on the subjects you're presenting, but also that you're able to present your knowledge in an understandable manner. Knowing your way around a computer and staying organized is essential.

A Dietitian's Salary

If you're a dietitian working in a hospital, the average salary is about $42,000 to $55,000. Salaries may be higher for professionals who manage staff, work as consultants to business, or conduct research. As a dietitian, there's always room to grow and improve in your occupation.
