Acids and Bases Scavenger Hunt

By: Triston H. and John B.

Definitions

Acids

A compound usually having a sour taste of neutralizing alkalis and reddening blue litmus paper, containing hydrogen that can be replaced by a metal or an electro positive group to form a salt, or containing an atom that can accept a pair of electrons from a base. Acids are proton donors that yield hydronium ions in water solution, or electron pair acceptors that combine with electron-pair donors or bases.

Base

Any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the color of indicators (e.g., turns red litmus paper blue), reacts with acids to form salts, and promotes certain chemical reactions (base catalysis).

Neutral

An object that does not have a positive or negative charge.
