Weekly Family Update # 40

June 7, 2020

Principal's Message

Hello Falcon Families,

Welcome to the last week of school! We have come a long way Oak Valley. These last several weeks have felt incredibly long and I know this experience has been very difficult for students, families, staff, the community, all of us! As I look back on my first year as your principal, and reflect back on each month, I immediately start to smile, I love this place. I love your kids. I am truly thankful to be a part of this learning community. Your students are silly, curious, studious, and kind. Each day I wake up excited for what will happen next. Thank you so much to this community for your support. I do not know what next year will look like, but I am confident that we will persevere as a community and our students will continue to thrive and grow. I look forward to many more years here at Oak Valley.

Last Friday was a very emotional day for many of our staff and Falcons. The 8th Grade Promotion Parade was truly incredible. Lots of tears were shed by all. After working in isolation for the past few months, I cannot put into words how amazing it was to see the smiling faces of our students again. I remember my 8th grade promotion well. From my uncomfortable dress clothes, to our stellar featured student singer (who is now an Oak Valley parent, hi Draeh) to eating a post-promotion lunch with my family at the brand new and newly opened Islands Restaurant in CMR, ha-ha. I know that our students will remember their promotion as well. It was a fantastic event.

Falcon Families, I wish you a happy summer. I hope your students are able to enjoy some time away from school to rest up, recharge, and refill. What an incredible school year we have had. We will be back!

Thanks for all you do for our Oak Valley Community! Go Falcons!

Beaming with Falcon Pride,

Mr. Young

Oak Valley Middle School

Thank you PTSA and OVMS Falcon Foundation

All of us here at Oak Valley would like to share a very special thanks to our outgoing PTSA President, Kellie Keller, and our outgoing OVMS Falcon Foundation President, Dr. David Li. Thank you so much for your dedication to our students. These are both volunteer positions that take a ton of time and organization. I cannot thank you both enough for your efforts. Our students have benefited greatly from the volunteer time and financial support that is raised by both the PTSA and Falcon Foundation. From Art Corps, to shade structures, and everything in between, you do fantastic work. Thank for your service to our school community!

Please welcome our new PTSA President, Melanie Smerican, and our new Foundation President, Darrell Keller.

I would encourage all families to get involved in these organizations. It is fun and rewarding work. For more information about the PTSA or the OVMS Falcon Foundation, or if you are interested in joining, please click the links below:

Counseling & Student Services Update

Click here for an update from your Counselors and Student Services Specialists. Please share this information and the activities with your Falcon student.

Report Cards

Report cards will be finished up and posted early next week. Just before Spring Break, District Office leadership and the PUSD School Board announced the grading system for the reminder of the school year. PUSD will implement a temporary change to credit/no credit grading for all students for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. More detailed information can found by clicking the PUSD Updates button below that links to the main PUSD website.

Students will see either CR for “Credit” or an NM for “No Mark” for all core classes on their report card. Students will not see a grade for Language Arts Workshop, Encore, 6th Grade Elective Wheel, Cross Age Tutoring, Teacher Assistant, Office Assistant, or other similar courses. Neither Grade Mark (CR or NM) will have any impact on a student’s GPA. All students will progress to the next grade level and will not need to retake any courses. This aligns with the guidance from the State Superintendent to “Do No Harm” to students current standing during this time.

Students and parents are able to access report cards online from the Synergy Student or Parent Portal by navigating to "Report Card," then selecting the link for our most recent report. Report cards can also be located in the "Documents" area at the bottom of the navigation bar.

Yearbook Update

Dear Parents,

Our yearbooks are coming our yearbooks are coming!! They will be here in just a few days.

Click the link below if you need to order your yearbook. The last day to order online is Wednesday the 10th.

Also, check out the yearbook preview here.

I can't remember if I ordered a yearbook?

Here are a couple of things to do to check and see if you have ordered a yearbook:

1.Check your credit card statement and email for something from Jostens. If you come across a receipt it would be in the amount of $38 or $43 if you got just a book. It may be a little higher if you got personalized or ordered signature packages. If you do find a receipt it is very important that you make sure it is dated AFTER August 2019 and is for a 2020 yearbook. They were not sold before that. All sales are done online, they were not sold at OVMS registration.

If you are an 8th grader and purchased a dedication ad in the back of the book it does not mean you purchased a yearbook. You will see a receipt from Jostens for that which cost either $25/$50/$100/$200 for your ad.

2. Call Jostens Order line 1-877-767-5217 (If the hold time is too long go to #3)

3. Email rdsmith@powayusd.com with your child's first and last name.

Thanks so much for your patience, the yearbook looks fantastic and will be here very soon!

OVMS Studio Productions and Armchair Traveler World Reader Winner

This year the OVMS Library hosted the OVMS Studio Production Club. Having filmed most of the initial sequences for their video project before the school grounds were closed, the club collaborated on Zoom to finish their video book trailer Slacker, a book by Gordon Korman. The members of this club showed great initiative and perseverance to continue with this project even when school closed. Not only did they take third place in the film contest they entered, but they shared their video with Mr. Korman, himself, who wrote them back a personal letter lauding the exceptional job they did. Mr. Korman also encouraged them to keep making videos! If you would like to see their video book trailer, click here.

Congratulations to our OVMS Armchair Traveler World Reader winner, Abby R. Abby is a student in Ms. Radlauer's Language Arts class, who strategically chose books both fiction and nonfiction from far away places, which not only increased her global perspective, but maximized her longitude and latitude coordinate points to win. She read a lot of historical fiction and biographies of people in the past that increased her historical knowledge, while she banked those extra past points too. Abby you are our world class reader for 2020. Bravo. Abby will be receiving a Paperwhite Kindle as her prize. Congratulations!
