Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future. Paul Boese.
Dear Parents
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, the body and blood of Jesus. The celebration of Eucharist is where we receive the body and blood of Jesus. It can be a difficult concept for us to really understand and take part in fully. When speaking to children about the Eucharist, we need to relate the Eucharist to their own experiences. Having a meal together is a good way to enjoy and share food. The Eucharist is a meal. On the table of the altar, Jesus feeds us His Body and Blood under the appearances of bread and wine. Just as food nourishes our body, the Eucharist is spiritual food that nourishes our soul.
Jesus is really present in the Eucharist under the form of bread and wine. When we celebrate the Eucharist and spend time with Jesus, our love for Him grows and his influence in our lives deepens.
As adult Christians, we need to take care that our weekly Eucharist does not become a ritual, something we go through on automatic pilot. Our bodies move obediently at the right places, our mouths speak the right words, but our minds are somewhere else. We need to be involved not only in receiving, but in giving; not just celebrating the Last Supper but in actively living out what Jesus asks of us.
The celebration of Eucharist has its impact not from the outside, but instead from within. St Augustine reminds us, it is Jesus in the Eucharist we receive, it is the same Jesus who takes us into Himself and incorporates us. The distinction is important, we are drawn into the person of Jesus not the other way around. When Jesus says, ‘Do this in memory of me’, He is asking us to allow ourselves to be eucharistically taken, to have our lives transformed, to be in communion with the Father and our brothers and sisters.
The Lord be with you
Chris.
Important Reminder
We are back at school on Wednesday 9 June .
Enjoy the extra long weekend!
We should pray
Come, Lord, in the fullness of Your risen presence, make Yourself known to Your people again through the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup. Amen.
Every Child Counts
It is a priority of Catholic Education WA to make representation to the State Government for families who choose a Catholic education, ensuring there is an accurate understanding of the significant contribution these families make to their children’s education. It is equally important that parents, caregivers and staff understand how funding for Catholic schools varies from funding for government schools.
The Every Child Counts website https://www.everychildcounts.net.au/ has been developed to facilitate this understanding and I encourage you to take a moment to view this website.
Farewell
We farewell Mrs Zana Karabatich as she had her last day as Education Assistant in PPR on Tuesday. Zana has been a part of our community for nearly fifteen years working with our littlest people from 3K, Kindy and Pre-Primary. Her friendly smile and hands on approach will be missed as she moves on to some exciting adventures with her family. We thank Zana for her dedication and passion. She has certainly been a wonderful asset to St Jerome’s and we wish her all the very best.
Town Hall
Our next Town Hall, 'How do you help a child navigate a path through anxiety?' will be one not to miss. It’s on Wednesday 16 June 2021 at 9.00am. A Town Hall is a 10 minute presentation and then a 10 minute Q&A session. This one is presented by our school psychologist Leanne Caruso. The link to RSVP your attendance follows.

Gospel Mark 14:12-16,22-26
This is my body; this is my blood
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to Jesus, ‘Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him, and say to the owner of the house which he enters, “The Master says: Where is my dining room in which I can eat the passover with my disciples?” He will show you a large upper room furnished with couches, all prepared. Make the preparations for us there.’ The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and prepared the Passover.
And as they were eating he took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them. ‘Take it,’ he said ‘this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them, and all drank from it, and he said to them, ‘This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many. I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.'
After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
Lock Down Drill
Today the school took part in a Lockdown Drill and it was very pleasing to see everyone respond so quickly and calmly. Drills are an important part of familiarising children with processes that need to take place if a threat ever entered the school. The school was locked down within two minutes of the drill being announced and there was not a sound to be heard around the campus. Thank you to all our parents and teachers for your cooperation and support.
Lifelink Lapathon and Colour Splash
Tomorrow afternoon we will hold our annual Lapathon for Lifelink followed by a Colour Splash. Thank you to all those parents who have been gathering sponsors for their children for this most worthwhile of charities! Lifelink supports twelve Catholic charities here in Western Australia and Catholic schools have helped raise over 2.5 million dollars over the last 21 years with St Jerome’s being one of the most generous communities!
This year we are holding three consecutive Lapathons on the oval commencing at 2:15pm. The Lapathon will last approximately 25-30mins and then children will be asked to put on their glasses (and masks if needed) for the Colour Splash. A separate colour splash will take place on each course.
- Pre Primary classes will be on the grassed netball courts.
- Year 1-3 classes on the main oval
- Year 4-6 classes on the lower oval
Parents are very welcome to come along . Please come through the white gates and use the WA Safe app to sign in. Bunting will be in place and parents are asked to remain in these designated areas. All three courses will be linked by bunting, enabling parents to move between the three courses. After the children have been dismissed by Mr Lilleyman and their teachers, they can collect their bags and water bottles and be taken home by their parents or move to the front of the school for Drive Through.
We may need the help of some parents to assist with the Colour Splash, and if so we will call for helpers during or immediately after the lapathon.
Recommendations
- Although the powder is not meant to stain clothes, we suggest children come in clothes and shoes that you would not be concerned about if they were affected.
- A pair of glasses to wear during the colour splash
- A mask if you are concerned about your child inhaling the powder (recommended for any asthmatics taking part).
- An old hat
- A plastic poncho or bin bag to cover your child to protect your car on the way home!
Best wishes

A message from the School Nurse
Colds
Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:
- Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.
- Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
- Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs)
- Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
- Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
- Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.
What to do if your child gets a cold
No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest: This need not be in bed.
- Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or iceblocks to suck for older children.
I have provided the following links from reliable websites for further information:-
When to keep kids home from school - Children's Health
Between colds, coughs and stomach bugs, kids get sick frequently. So when symptoms like a runny nose or stomach pain hit, it may be difficult to decide when you should keep your child home from daycare or school.
Colds in kids & teens: how to treat them | Raising Children Network
Children and colds. The average preschool child has at least six colds a year. Sometimes, especially in winter, it might seem that your child is sick for weeks at a time, barely getting over one cold before getting another one.
