The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - April 16, 2023
A note from Ms. Welch
Our return from Spring Break signals the beginning of our final Quarter of the school year. We have 9 amazing weeks of teaching and learning in front of us and we are ready to support our students to soar!
Below I want to share a few bits of information for events that are upcoming.
QUARTER 3 PROGRESS REPORTS
With the end of Quarter 3, teachers will be creating progress reports ONLY for students who are below grade level standard in at least one academic area, behavior, or those students supported through Special Education services. Since not all students receive this round of progress reports, these reports will be mailed home to families on Friday, April 21. If you receive a progress report at home and you have questions, please reach out to your child's teacher for more information. We are here to partner with you around your student's success.
All students will receive a final report card at the end of the school year.
SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT (SBA) FOR GRADES 3-5
This spring, students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the standardized Smarter Balanced (SBA) assessment. You will find specific testing dates below in the newsletter. It is very important that students are at school on-time each of these dates. It is also helpful for students to get a good night's rest and have breakfast in the morning. Our amazing PTA will be helping with snacks for students while they are testing.
If you have questions about the SBA assessment, please reach out to your classroom teacher or Ms. Welch.

Track & Field
Go, Sailors!
The Little Mermaid - Our school play
Dear Families,
It’s almost time for Missoula Children’s Theater! Auditions will take place this coming Monday, April 17th from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM in the Cottage Lake Elementary gym. This is a group audition–no advance preparation is necessary, but a smile never hurts. Students should just be ready to come and have a good time! Please make sure that your child has a sack dinner each day of rehearsals, including the audition.
Note that not all students may get a role. Please plan on being at the school at 6:00 PM ready to pick up your child in the unlikely event that they are not cast. After the directors announce the cast, some cast members will be asked to stay for the first rehearsal which begins at 6:15 PM.
Rehearsals will be conducted every day. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role and be available for all scheduled performances. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition.
We want this event to be a huge success, but we cannot do it without your help. Click Here to review the SignUp Genius to see what you can do to help. We need to fill the following volunteer spots filled before Monday:
- Rehearsal check-in and supervision
- Pizza party
- Flower arrangements
- Performance supervision
“The Little Mermaid” will be presented on Saturday, April 22nd at 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM at the Cottage Lake Elementary gym. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to showtime. Tickets are on sale now for $10 per person. Email smckinnon@nsd.org for scholarships. Tickets will also be available for purchase with cash at the door, but advanced purchases are recommended as seating may be limited. Please bring cash if you would like to purchase snacks, popcorn, or flowers from the concession stand.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email president@cottagelakepta.org or Click Here to visit our Missoula Children's Theater webpage.
2023-24 Intent to Return survey
To assist in this process, I am asking ALL families in grades K-4 to complete the below survey. Please complete one survey per family.
If you have questions, please reach out to ask. I'd like all responses by Wednesday, April 26. Thank you!
Seeking Community Serve lead
Community Serve Day Site Lead volunteer opportunity
Community Serve Day is an annual event where local churches, schools, non-profits, and businesses come together for our schools. For one day, our community comes together to help our school prepare for the coming year by helping set up classrooms, making improvements to the campuses, and more. It’s a unique opportunity to make connections with other CLE families and to support the amazing staff as they get ready to welcome students to the new school year. The event is sponsored by Northshore Community Church, which has been partnering with NSD for years. Each school needs to have a Site Lead to participate in the event and this coming summer Cottage Lake Elementary will need a new Site Lead.
The position involves
- Participating in one or two informational/planning meetings leading up to the event.
- Helping to promote the event through the PTA and school social media in order to gather volunteers.
- Assisting volunteers with job assignments on the day of the event.
The Site Lead will be fully supported by the coordinator at Northshore Community Church and fellow Leads, who have plenty of experience and advice to share. The only requirement is a desire to help support CLE and its amazing staff! I have been a part of the event since 2016 and have been the Site Lead since 2018, so I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I can also connect you with the church’s coordinator, who is a wealth of information. If it’s something you would consider, please reach out to me at buffyanson@yahoo.com.

COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there has been a total of 3 confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year is now open!
Dear Northshore Families and Prospective Families:
Northshore School District’s enrollment process for 2023-24 is open! Enroll early to receive important information and prepare for next fall.
PRESCHOOL
Northshore preschool programs are now enrolling children, ages 3-5. The preschool years are among the most critical in a child's life that influence learning. The Northshore School District is committed to providing the support that our youngest learners need to prepare them to succeed in school, cultivate friendships, and create a sense of community and belonging. The district proudly offers a variety of inclusive general education learning environments. Classes implement the Creative Curriculum, a developmental whole child framework approach, and utilize the GOLD assessment tool to monitor student learning.
Available preschool programs include both FREE and tuition-based options.
FREE Programs: Head Start, ECEAP and Ready Start
Eligibility is determined by the child’s age, family income, and opportunity gaps. These programs are located at Sorenson Early Childhood Center, Woodmoor Elementary, and Kenmore Elementary. Spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis for eligible families. Families are encouraged to complete an application as soon as possible. The information on the application is confidential and used only to determine a child’s eligibility for the programs. The District does not require, check, or report on immigration or DSHS status. View the applications for income-eligible free preschool.
Tuition Programming
The Ready Start programs are located at Sorenson Early Childhood Center and Woodmoor Elementary. Spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Families are encouraged to complete an application as soon as possible. View the application for tuition-based programs.
To learn more about any of our district preschool programs, visit the Northshore Early Childhood District website. Families who have questions can email Sorenson Early Childhood Center at sorensonecc@nsd.org or call (425) 408-5570.
KINDERGARTEN
Northshore is excited to welcome our new Kindergarten students! By registering now, families have the opportunity to learn about upcoming school engagement events and prepare for the first day of school, Sept. 6, 2023. Enrollment is done online. Directions on how to enroll, including what documentation is required, can be found on the District enrollment webpage.
If you have questions or require a paper-based enrollment form, please contact your child’s neighborhood school. Your neighborhood school is based on your home address. You can find your child’s school by using the Address Look Up Tool.
CHOICE SCHOOLS
In addition to excellent neighborhood schools, Northshore offers a variety of choice schools. A choice school may be exactly what your child needs to thrive academically and socially. Learn more about choice schools and priority enrollment dates by visiting each school webpage:
