We are replacing reading logs with the Principal's Reading Challenge. Let the reading begin!
Principal's Reading Challenge
Read 1000 pages or more by the end of the school year! Only books read between September 1, 2016 and May 15, 2017 will be counted.
What to do: For every five books you read at your level, fill out a Read 1000 slip available in the office and have your parents sign it and return it to the office!
If you do not know your reading level, please ask your teacher. Ms Mary the Librarian can help you find the level of a book!
When you bring it to the office, we will record your progress on the Read 1000 poster for all to see!
Students will be honored each month in the newsletter, throughout the year and at the End-of-the-Year Assembly.
Math
Language Arts/ Literacy
With our Quarter 1 exams impending, review is the word! This week, students will be reviewing grammar, word study, vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies from Themes 1-3. This will include recognizing the main idea of a story or paragraph; using prior knowledge to make connections to the text and self; asking questions before, during and after reading for better comprehension and using prior knowledge and context make inferences for fuller understanding. Students will also review concepts like recognizing the subject and the predicate in a sentence, the difference between nouns and verbs as well as simple versus complex sentences and conjunctions.
Science
Next week we will continue to explore two forces - magnetism and gravity. If you have magnets at home, your child can show some of the interesting activities that we have done at school, and maybe make up their own investigation!
