CANNON CONNECTION
A newsletter for Cannon Elementary families - 2018-2019
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17, 2018
Hi Cannon Parents!
We are so disappointed that the weather didn't cooperate for our families to attend the Back to School Family Picnic once again! Our Dad's Club & PTA are working together with the City of Grapevine to try and reserve the Dove Park facilities on another date. We will keep everyone posted about a possible reschedule date!
This week, we hope to see our Cannon dads and other family members at the WatchDOGS Kickoff and Involvement Fair on Tuesday, 9/18 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the school cafeteria. Come enjoy free pizza for the whole family and learn how to be part of WatchDOGS and other ways to be involved at Cannon! See information in this newsletter about this special event!
We are looking forward to another great week with our Cubs!!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Blizzard

WHAT IS THE GCISD READS CHALLENGE?
The GCISD Reads initiative is designed to build a love of reading in students by encouraging them to read a large quantity and a wide variety of books. We are so excited that we ALREADY have students completing this challenge for this school year! These students are excited to continue to challenge themselves by setting new reading goals! At Cannon, when students complete their reading challenge, the prize patrol stops by for a visit to celebrate with the students!
Who: GCISD students, staff, and parents are all invited to participate.
What: Students have several challenge options to choose from including:
Challenge 1: Book Challenge
Read 25 books of your choosing (minimum 100 pages per book)
OR
Read 100 books of your choosing (an option for K-2 students only)
Challenge 2: Page Challenge
Watch your pages add up as you read (1500 pgs for K-2, 2500 pgs for 3-5)
Challenge 3: Genre Challenge
Explore a wide variety of genres- 3 biography, 3 non-fiction/informational, 3 fantasy, 3 poetry, 3 mystery, 3 historical fiction, 3 fiction (any topic or form), 4 free choice
**As part of our new eBook initiative in the GCISD Learning Commons, students meeting any of the challenges (1, 2, or 3) must read at least 2 of their books as eBooks! Find eBooks on Overdrive through Classlink, or the Epic app on ipads.
When: Between June 1, 2018 and May 1, 2019
Where: Reading can take place in or outside of school using paper or electronic materials.
Why: Students who read more do better in school, have wider vocabularies, and have a lifelong habit enabling them to continue learning beyond their K-12 education.
How: Students will keep track of their reading in a log that notes the title, number of pages, genre, and date completed. See the list below for possible recording logs. Once students have completed a challenge, their logs should be turned in to their classroom teacher or the librarian. The librarian will record the completed challenges on a Google form to ensure they receive a certificate at the end of the school year and are invited to our GCISD Reads celebration.
Click here to see Mrs. Wagner's website to find all of the recording forms that you and your child will need to keep track of their reading!

UPDATES & REMINDERS
JOIN US THIS WEEK!!
WatchD.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student's life. Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears. There are also may other opportunities for both moms and dads to get involved in our school this year and we are excited to share them with everyone!
In order to participate, you need to do two things:
- Complete the bottom portion of the form sent home last week with your child about this event and return it asap to let us know if you will attend, so that we can have an accurate head count for the food.
- Mark your calendars and show up on Tuesday, September 18th at 6:00 pm!
HERE COMES THE BUS
GCISD is happy to announce the adoption of an innovative mobile device app and website entitled, Here Comes the Bus®. This app allows you to view the real-time location of your child’s school bus on your smartphone, tablet or computer. The app is free and enables you to:
- See the real-time location of your child’s bus both before and after school
- Confirm that your child’s bus has arrived at the bus stop, at school or both
- Receive a push notification* or email message when the bus is near your stop, has been substituted, or when we have important information to relay
Getting started:
Available in three languages (English, Spanish and French), the Here Comes the Bus app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
- Download the Here Comes the Bus app* or visit herecomesthebus.com
- Click the Sign Up button
- Enter school code 79915 and click “Next” followed by “Confirm”
- Complete the User Profile information
- Click “Students” and enter your child’s last name and student ID number when prompted
- Once you confirm your information, you’re ready to begin using Here Comes the Bus!
To sign up on the website, or to learn more about this service, visit the Here Comes the Bus website.
**Your child needs to be a registered bus rider in order to ride a GCISD bus. If you are wanting to register your child to ride the bus, please do so in Skyward. If you are needing to temporarily change your child's bus transportation (i.e. riding home with a friend for a day, etc.), please complete this form. This app tracks only GCISD buses, not individual students.
