BASD Coaching Rundown

Issue #6: May 2021

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

As instructional coaches, we're fortunate to work with such amazing teachers across the district. We know this year hasn't been easy, but we want you to know how much we appreciate all you do for BASD students. You know how much we love poetry, so please enjoy this brief video in celebration of this special week! We hope you get some time to relax and recharge this weekend!
Teacher Appreciation Week 2021

Virtual Learning Playbook

It's been a while since we've released a new section in the BASD Virtual Learning Playbook. Now that the year is winding down, we feel it's fitting to share Section 5: Season Recap AND Section 6: The Analytics of Virtual Teaching and Learning. Please take a few minutes to read through the info. As always, there's a little challenge involved. Anyone who completes the brief task will be entered in our final prize raffle of the school year. Check out the VLP for more info!

March Madness Competition Recap

Thanks to all who participated in our first-ever BASD March Madness Competition! Over 30 district teachers formed teams and engaged in a variety of professional learning activities. Over 400 points were scored over the course of three weeks. It was a close game, but in the end, Las Senoritas Locas was our winning team! Congrats to team members Ashley Waite and Kylie Hernandez. They each won a $50 gift card of their choice!

We also would like to recognize the MVP of each school. The following teachers scored the most points in their building:

  • Bellefonte Elementary: Julie Henry
  • Benner: Kacie Montgomery
  • Pleasant Gap: Trevor Montgomery
  • Marion-Walker: Jennifer Carroll
  • BAMS: Ashley Waite
  • BAHS: Sarah Rodgers

Finally, we'd like to give a huge shout-out to Sommer Garman! She was our principal MVP. Not only were members of the winning team from BAMS, but she had the greatest number of teachers participate. Check out her cool trophy below!

We plan to continue to gamify professional learning next school year, and hope you consider participating in a future competition.

Digital Freebies

In each newsletter, we share a few fun finds that we came across in our internet travels. Feel free to add the digital resources described below to your toolbox!

Since regular field trips are few and far between these days, check out these two links for some engaging virtual experiences!

May Day, anyone? Check out this fun Bitmoji Calendar for special days in May to celebrate. From Star Wars Day to Grape Popsicle Day, there's something for everyone! Hyperlinks to accompanying activities are included for each special date on the calendar.

Looking for a unique way to have students wrap up a book, unit, or the entire school year? Consider having them create a Photo Bento Project! Inspired by the Japanese Bento Box, this strategy is not only fun, but forces students to use higher level thinking skills. Check out this presentation for more info.

Check out this lesson about the properties of water geared for HS students. Best part? It was created using Pear Deck! Just make a copy, open up the Pear Deck Add-On, and "Voila!"

BASD is hiring a STEM Coach!

While we miss Melissa terribly, we're excited that the district will soon be advertising for a K-12 STEM Coach. It's incredibly important that our students leave BASD prepared for the future, and this position will undoubtedly bring more STEM experiences and opportunities to our classrooms. Thinking about applying for the position, but not sure all that instructional coaching entails? Feel free to reach out to one (or both) of us. We'd be happy to share more about what you can expect in the coaching role!

Book Nook

As school winds down, we hope you spend more time outside enjoying the warm weather. We also hope you take some time to READ! The first book collection highlights some recently released (or soon-to-be released) professional resources. Below that you'll find a professional book collection we've curated around the topic of equity. Click on each book cover to learn more!
Also, given the current discourse in the community surrounding the mascot issue, and keeping in mind that people on both sides of the argument expressed a need to further educate our students about Native American history, we've included some books you might want to add to your classroom library collection. Click on each book cover to read a review from Kirkus.
Finally, are you looking for a book just to read for pleasure? Check out the following titles that piqued our interest below!

Jared Box Book Drive

Special thanks to all BASD employees who purchased books off of our wishlist to support The Jared Box Project. The list was cleared in less than 2 weeks! The books will be added to boxes volunteers put together at Leadership Centre County's Jared Box Day on May 22nd. Check out the pictures below -- more than 200 amazing books will be put in the hands of local children via this drive. We are grateful to live in a community that values literacy!
