Keep Up the Nightly, At-Home Reading!
Between other homework, after-school activities, and just regular life, it can be challenging to “fit it all in.” Sometimes daily reading at home may fall by the wayside in our busy days, even though we know it’s important and there are many benefits to it.
An infographic that was created based on some educational research has been circulating the internet. While this doesn’t show the entire scope and context of the research, look at the math at the top, on regular, periodic, and infrequent reading, it is striking. This can help remind us of the importance consistently reading.
How can we keep up the reading when it is challenging to fit it in? Two big pieces to this can be the joy factor and the children having choice. Children (and adults, too!) will enjoy reading when they can experience joy in reading. Conditions under which reading is a chore or a punishment can be joy-killers. Finding ways to make it fun and even enjoy the book together can bring the joy factor. Children may find it fun to read aloud to an adult, sibling, pet, or even a stuffed animal. Reading with others, allows children to share reactions to and opinions about what they read as well as experience great time spent together. Related to this is giving children choices. We all enjoy tasks more when we have options because we feel more in control. Choices you give your child could include reading material, genre, partner to read to, time, location in your home, etc. Your child might choose to read a book along with an audiobook (our older students may already be familiar with how to access these on their iPads through the Oak Park Public Library, as was shared with them by Ms. Maneck in our school library.) A choice could even be to read with the lights on or in the dark with a flashlight! When children can look forward to it, it can be easier to make and maintain a daily habit of reading.
Celebrate Holmes Staff
Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!
