Teacher Feature - Mrs. Pope
Mrs. Pope has been teaching for 20 years. She says that she was inspired to start teaching because she enjoys helping others learn something new. She went to UNC Charlotte and if she had to teach any other wheel class, she would teach chorus.
Before teaching here, she taught at Brawley middle school, but she decided to teach here because it was closer to her house so she volunteered to transfer here. If Mrs. Pope could have any other job, should would probably work in a field like graphic design. While she was growing up she wanted to be a nurse. Her favorite author is Nicholas Sparks and her favorite color is blue.

A History Lesson
Roman Emperors
By: Spencer P.
Rome became a very powerful ancient civilization under the rule of powerful people called Emperors. One of these Emperors is Caesar Augustus, who was one of the founders of the Second Triumvirate and he is also the adopted son of Julius Caesar. Another is Claudius, also known as Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus, who had always thought to be dimwitted.
Caesar Augustus was born on September 23, 63 BC. In 44 BC, his great-uncle Julius Caesar adopted him and took in the name Gaius Julius Caesar. Before he became an Emperor, he went by many names like Octavias. Julius Caesar was assassinated by Brutus and Cassius in March of 44 BCC. In 43 BCE, Octavian allied with Julius Caesar’s friend and relative, Mark Antony, to form the Second Triumvirate. In 42 BCE, at the Battle of Philippi, Brutus and Cassius were defeated by the group and as punishment for assassinating Julius Caesar, they were forced to kill themselves. Caesar ruled from 63 BC to 14 AD.
Claudius was born on August 1, 10 BC. He had always been thought of as dimwitted because he drooled, stammered, and limped, but when he became an Emperor he proved to be very efficient. The first thing he did as an Emperor is executing Cassius. Next, he built a harbor in Ostia. After building the harbor, Claudius expanded the Roman empire further by destroying the treason trials of Caligula. The last thing Claudius did was that he conquered Britain. Claudius ruled from 41 to 54 CE.
Some important things to remember are: Caesar Augustus ruled from 63 BC to 14 AD. His original name was Gaius Octavius and his adopted name was Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. Caesar was one of the founders of the Second Triumvirate. Claudius ruled from 41 to 54 CE. His full name was Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus. Claudius had always been thought as dimwitted.
My favorite Emperor between the two is Claudius because he proved that being dimwitted couldn’t stop him from being a great Emperor. I hope you think the information from this paper is as interesting as I do.

Teacher Feature - Mrs. Trawinski
Mrs. Trawinski teachers 6th grade at Lakeshore Middle School. She has been a teacher for 17 years and has taught at Lakeshore for 5 years. Her favorite color is orange. Mrs. Trawinski grew up in Davidson, North Carolina. She went to Clemson University. She decided to become a teacher because her 4th grade teacher was amazing, she made learning fun and made Mrs. Trawinski wanted to learn more. She decided to teach social studies because it is like telling a story. She has taught many subjects, but social studies is her favorite. If she had to teach another subject besides social studies, she would teach ELA because she loves to read and make connections, and she can be a storyteller then too. Mrs. Trawinski said if she had to teach high school, she would teach 9th grade because she would like to see the students grow as they move up to higher grades and prepare for their futures.

Mrs. Redling grew up in Wisconsin. The college she went to was UW-Green Bay. Mrs. Redling has been teaching band for 13 years, but she has only been teaching band at Lakeshore Middle since 2016. The reason she started teaching at Lakeshore Middle School is that it was a great opportunity and she could be close to home. If she taught high school the subject that she would teach is Band. She would enjoy teaching all of the grades. If Mrs. Redling could have any other job she said, “I don't think I would have any other job.” She enjoys being a band teacher. In band, her favorite song to give kids is Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli or anything by him. Mrs. Redling’s Favorite sport is volleyball. If she had to choose to between playing a sport or being a teacher, she would choose to be a teacher. She said, “I am too old.” She is funny. If she had to teach another subject she would teach social studies. Mrs. Redling’s favorite color is blue so if you decide to give her a gift, make it blue. Finally, her favorite author is Ernest Hemingway. I hope you enjoyed reading about our beloved band teacher, Mrs.Redling. If you see her in the hallway say something nice or just smile. Editorial - In Our Opinion
Self-driving cars
Driverless cars are very dangerous right now. However, some articles you may find on the internet may be misleading. One article is about a person getting hit by the self-driving car. The headline looks quite bad and appears like it was the cars fault, but in reality, the women had a higher chance of getting hit if there was a driver. There were cars parked on either side of the road, and she biked between two cars into the road without looking. The car responded immediately, but it couldn’t stop in time.
Even with this “fake” news, they are still moderately dangerous. Self-driving cars are a thing of the future, so it seems a little early to allow them now. There are many imperfections with them, such as the little things like detecting bumps and the cars being “too nice”. By too nice, I mean that the car will not go due to another car just being in range. People could think that driving while on their phones, or more like riding while on their phones, is ok but if you were to go into a standard driving car you could be more likely to go on your phone out of habit since it was fine all of the other times when the car was driving and you were not.
What is also scary is that the cars can get hacked. Also, we may become too dependent on self-driving cars. If the car is not working, you would have to drive. If you rely on it so much, then you could be a major road hazard. The car getting hacked can make you suspicious about the direction you are going, but you trust the car to take you where you need to go. If you go off the grid especially in the mountains, the car could glitch and potentially fall off the mountain.
But there is another area these cars could affect, and that is the workforce. Not as many people will be driving trucks, for it could be taken over by self-driving cars. It will be a while until that will be a problem, however, since even when self-driving cars are legal there must still be a driver. There are some small things you would have to address, like insurance. Since there would be no driver at fault, you would have to blame the company and then it would get very confusing in the end.
Of course, there is a lot of hope for having them on the road. Humans can make a lot of errors while driving. Self-driving cars don’t have road rage, and they don’t get drunk either. Human fault is the reason for 94% of all car crashes, so eliminating that factor would easily help the case of having self-driving cars.
Many people are doing their best to make the future road safer, and self-driving cars seem like the best way to do so. Even though today may not be the best time for them, the future will no doubt bring self-driving cars. It will be a much safer and faster way to travel, we just need to give companies a little bit more time to get everything worked out, and when they do, the roads will become much, much safer.

Teacher Feature - Ms. Wolf
Ms. Wolf chose this job because she loves children. She went to Niagara University in New York. Out of all of the grades that she has taught, she likes 7th grade the most. If she wasn’t a teacher she would be a stand up comedian. When she was little she wanted to be a princess ballerina doctor in space. According to Ms. Wolf, she danced very poorly and played numerous sports very poorly when she was younger. Ms. Wolf thinks making connections to the real world in class is "thought provoking.” She enjoys teaching kids because she is a “people person.” She likes all of her classes the same even though she leans towards 4th block. She has a dog named “Edgar Allen Paw” which is named after her favorite poet.

An Interview with Mr. Coey
(Q1) Do you like your job?
(A1) Yes, I do like my job. Teaching can be very rewarding. I almost look at it as giving back to
society in some way. I would much rather do this than work in an office building huddled into some cubicle.
(Q2) How do you feel about kids?
(A2) I like being around kids only sometimes. If they are misbehaving it’s not very much fun.
When they are attentive and wanting to learn, then it’s great!
(Q3) What is your favorite subject to teach?
(A3) I taught language arts (ELA) my first 4 years here, so I would probably want to go back to
that. If there was a class based on word study, though, I would love that too.
(Q4) If you weren't a teacher, what would you be doing?
(A4) That’s a pretty open-ended question. If I could be anything, it would be a rock star or a
baseball player. But being a professional writer (author) is probably much more realistic.
(Q5) What inspired you to become a teacher?
(A5) I became a teacher because I wanted to help change young peoples’ lives for the better.
Plus, when I was growing up, my teachers weren’t very good. They weren’t very
enthusiastic or passionate about what they taught. I want to be better than they were,
and hopefully my students appreciate that.
(Q6) What is your favorite grade to teach?
(A6) I love teaching 6 th grade, but honestly, I would like to eventually try to teach high school
one day.
(Q7) Where did you go to college?
(A7) I went to Univ of Cincinnati for my undergrad and obtained a degree in journalism. Then
I got my teaching certificate from Cleveland State Univ and eventually received my
master’s degree in education from Gardner-Webb Univ.

Mrs.Wisecup has been a counselor for 13 years. The reason she became a counselor for this school is because she wanted to do something different than what she was doing before. Editorial: In My Opinion
Should there be more time in between classes?
In my opinion, I think we should have more time in between classes than three minutes. There are still kids in the hall not in class either at their locker, coming from another hall, getting stuck in a crowd, etc. It may also give people time in between classes to play in the halls and bathrooms, but it is mostly useful to the students that want to be responsible and get to class before they face consequences. Five minutes would give more time for people to get to their classes before the bell rings, especially if students have to go to another hall. It is hard for students to get to a class in 7th grade because of the huge crowd in the 7th grade hall. I think we should have five minutes in between classes instead of three. Five minutes would help students get what they need from their locker too.

Editorial - In Our Opinion
Should students have recess or free period?
A big question for kids in middle school is do they need a free period or recess during their busy school day? A person who supports this may argue that you can become unchallenged at a point in time during class and you may need a break. Taking a break can help your mind focus and that will help students complete more work. What if you have Study Hall but you have no work to do, or you worked so hard that you completed your assignments-a free period or recess would be beneficial. These are some reasons why a lot of people think that we should have recess in middle school.
There are some downsides, however, such as only some students will get to go to recess. This would include students with good grades or those that have finished their work. They will be the only ones who get to have recess or free time. This also doesn’t benefit teachers, because in elementary school during recess teachers could plan and take a break. Now we have wheel which is what that time is for. It is also hard to monitor the kids outside and make sure that only kids who have earned are playing outside. We have more kids in the school now and monitoring them is more work.
There is some hope. Kids with good grades are most likely more responsible with how they spend their time, so if they have work to do, they do it. Also, people can make friends while they are outside and relaxing. This could also encourage kids to do better in their classes so they could participate. Since a lot of people may be long for free time in their day, getting the chance to have a break may be very tempting. Kids may be determined to work extra hard to boost up their grades and possibly get rewarded. Overall, there are great arguments for both sides, but in the end, it depends on how well the students work and how responsible they are. In our opinion, we think that it is better for people to take a break. This can encourage people to get better grades and could even have a positive effect on the school.
