The Mustang Round Up
June 4, 2023
June is Pride Month
Good Evening Mustang Families,
This month we celebrate LGBT Pride Month. Each year it's celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising and strives to achieve equal justice and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Americans. This month memorials are held for those members of the community whose lives have been negatively impacted by stigma or hate crimes, as well as recognize the positive impact the LGBTQ community has had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.
For some, this month is a celebration, for others, it's a time to honor those lives impacted by discrimination. For the staff at Marshall, we celebrate this month to show our LGBTQ+ students and families that they are loved, welcomed, and accepted at school. This student population is often the most victimized and stigmatized on campus. A national study showed that 84% of transgender students felt unsafe because of their gender identification and 3/4 of transgender students have had direct experience with victimization. A hostile school environment was shown to lead to higher rates of depression and thoughts of suicide. At Marshall, approximately 49 students identify as either transgender or gender-neutral. In a Marshall survey, 33% of this demographic group reported not feeling welcomed on campus compared to only 12% of all students. Having a safe welcoming culture is important to academic success and overall mental well-being. For example, a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that when the guardians, teachers, and peers around them use their chosen names, trans youth experience a lower risk for depression and suicidal ideation.
Lastly, I'd like to add that while our LGBTQ students are at the forefront of our minds during June, we also need to remember that their experiences also impact their family. We keep in our hearts the parents, siblings, and close friends who walk alongside our LGBTQ community and are often the "first responders" when faced with adversity. While our nation wrestles with the social commentary and policy debate, we at Marshall remind our students that our aim is to make sure they feel welcomed, accepted, and loved.
