Horticulture Club
Are you looking for a new club to join? Do you like plants or enjoy gardening? Well this club might be for you! The Horticulture Club is a hands-on club where we will be working in the greenhouse and courtyard growing lots of plants and discussing issues related to horticulture and agriculture! This year we hope to go on a couple of fun field trips and have a few guest speakers. Last year was our first year and we had a successful plant sale, we are going to have an even bigger and better plant sale this year! Our kickoff meeting is next Tuesday 9/12 directly after school in Ms. Billouin's room (H107)/the greenhouse. We plan on having meetings every Tuesday, 2:30-3:15. Please sign up using this google form.
Please email Harrison Sachs at harrison_sachs-2024@bedfordps.org or Ms. Billouin at beth_billouin@bedfordps.org if you have any questions.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
Interested in Health Care take a look at this opportunity at Boston Children's Hospital
Per Diem - Peer LeaderThe Congressional Youth Advisory Council
The Congressional Youth Advisory Council is intended to be a civic engagement opportunity open to Massachusetts 6th District students in their junior or senior year of high school. The council is a year-long commitment, consisting of policy discussions, meetings with the Congressman and staff, and legislative writing.
The nonpartisan council is designed to provide youth with the chance to have their voices heard on public policy, engage with elected representation, and develop the skills to address the critical issues facing our country. We have no doubt that the student who participate in the council will help contribute to the next generation of leaders.
Applications for the 2023-2024 Youth Council are open until September 30th, 2023, at 11:59pm EST.
Massachusetts James Otis Lecture Series
Please see the attached introduction packet for more information. The application and details on the council can be found at moulton.house.gov/services/youth-council.
The following message is from the Massachusetts James Otis Lecture Series. The program will be held at the Massachusetts State House in Boston on Tuesday, September 19th from 1:00 pm until 3:30 pm.
If you are interested in attending, please email me (Mrs. Butler - Social Studies) by Thursday, September 14th.
Priority will be given to upperclassmen enrolled in the Law class. If you are chosen to attend, you are responsible for your own transportation.
On September 19, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates is presenting its 18th James Otis Lecture in the Massachusetts State House. Attendance is free for all Massachusetts high school students. Nationally renowned scholars and historians Akhil Reed Amar (Sterling Professor of History at Yale) and Presidential Historian Dr. Lindsay Chervinsky will host a discussion of the history, powers and limitations of the Executive Branch under the Constitution. The program begins at 1 pm and will include a question and answer session with the panelists. It will be a fascinating discussion.
Students sit in the seats of members of the House of Representatives, one of the most historic legislative chambers in the country. Each attendee will be given a copy of either Dr. Chervinsky’s book, The Cabinet, which recounts the history of the country’s first Cabinet under George Washington, or Professor Amar’s most recent book, The Words That Made Us, about the documents and speeches over the first 80 years of our nation’s existence and how they continue to impact us today. Following the program, Dr. Chervinsky and Professor Amar will host a book signing.
This is a unique opportunity for your students to learn from and interact with two of the country’s preeminent constitutional historians. A program description is attached.

BHSPA NEWS
Important Information for BHS Caregivers from the BHSPA (Bedford High School Parents Association)
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. We are excited to announce that the BHSPA will be using Membership Tool Kit (MTK) this year. The BEST/PTO successfully launched use of MTK last year, so families with younger students may already be familiar with the name.
The Bedford High School Parents Association (BHSPA) and the Middle School Parents Association (MSPA) are coming together to provide a one-stop information center for caregivers of both Bedford High School (BHS) and John Glenn Middle School (JGMS) students. Caregivers will be able to stay in-the-know with school-specific communications, a combined JGMS & BHS Student Directory (later in the fall), and much more.
We are asking all caregivers to please register at our new site: https://www.bedfordpco.org, where you will be prompted to login and then create an account. If you already have a Membership Toolkit account login with another organization, you can use the same log-in on our site.

Questions? - Please don't hesitate to contact us at bhsbucsparents@gmail.com.
Safety/Drop Off/Parking
We will continue to keep all external doors locked this year. Cars may not be idle or parked directly in front of the main entrance as it needs to be cleared for emergency vehicles and for busses. Please know that you are subject to ticketing by the Bedford Police Department if you park in the restricted lane.
Students with vehicles should park in designated student parking spots and need to have a valid BHS parking sticker by October 1. The Parking Sticker application may be found here.
If you are dropping off your student, please do so at the front of the building in the student lot or at the side near the public library. Do not enter the bus loop at the front of the school as it causes safety issues for students unloading.
Student item drop off Location
To minimize visitors entering the building this year we have moved the student item drop off location to the vestibule located by the main doors. Please ring the bell and we will let you in. We encourage you to try to meet your student after school for the items but in the event that does not work please leave items on the table right inside the vestibule.
The high school is not responsible for electronics, money, keys, sports equipment, etc. left at the table. Students can check for the item dropped off in between classes and at lunch.
If your student forgot their school iPad please bring that into the main office.
