KUTZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S NEWSLETTER
January 15, 2021
Congratulations, Ms. Reith!
Last Friday, January 8, Rose Reith, Kutz Elementary Crossing Guard, served her last day on the crosswalk prior to retirement. It was a job she performed with love and care for more than 30 years! Now that is dedication! We had the opportunity to personally thank Rose for her years of service keeping Kutz Elementary students safe each and every day, as well as present her with some gifts from Kutz.
All the best to Ms. Reith in her retirement and the new adventures that lie ahead!
A Message From Mr. Murtha...
The upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is unique in that it is one of the few holidays where we ask our citizens to consider spending the day in service. What a fitting way to honor the late Reverend King through service to others, as he certainly dedicated his life to helping improve the lives of others. Dr. King not only focused on civil rights for all, but he also made it his personal mission to wage a war against poverty in the United States of America. His work goes unfinished for both causes, but the groundwork he laid impacts us today and likely will forevermore. Moreover, the progress he achieved and set the stage to achieve cannot be undervalued. Dr. King is arguably one of the most influential individuals in the history of the United States if not the world.
Our current circumstances may make some acts of service more difficult this year. I certainly encourage participation in any meaningful service act that would honor the legacy of Dr. King. If you and your family are unable to serve in the greater community, consider smaller acts of service in your home or community (helping mom/dad; checking in on an elderly neighbor). Just be sure to do so with parent approval (if under 18) and with the health and safety of yourself and others in mind.
I wish you a wonderful weekend of fun, as well as reflection (whether it be in thought or service) on the selfless work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Updated Travel Request Form and Policy
Here is the new family travel request form to act as a reminder to families when returning from a state or country on the commonwealth’s travel advisory list: https://www.cbsd.org/cms/lib/PA01916442/Centricity/Domain/386/CB328_familytravel_writable_PDF_Oct%202020.pdf
PLEASE NOTE: Per the guidelines listed in the district’s health and safety plan, students returning from states/countries listed on the commonwealth’s "COVID-19 Information for Travelers" web page may not attend school in-person or participate in school-sponsored activities in person for 10 days from the date on which they return from travel. (Students will participate in classes online during this time period). Upon day 5 of quarantine, a student may obtain a COVID-19 test and, if it is negative, they are permitted to return after 7 days of quarantine (return to school on day 8). School administrators reserve the right to enforce this procedure in the event that students return in-person in violation of this directive.
Attendance Expectations
Children are expected to attend all elements of the school day in whatever mode you selected, unless they have an excused absence (i.e. illness, appointment). It is important to understand that attendance is mandatory for all students per the compulsory attendance laws of Pennsylvania. Attendance will be taken each school day. Students that are not in class or not logged on at the start of class will be marked absent or tardy if they arrive late to their physical or virtual class.
If your child will not be able to attend school, in person or virtually, or needs to miss part of the day for an appointment, parents need to email kpirrone@cbsd.org. Email is strongly preferred but if you are unable to email the school, please call the school attendance line at 267-893-3900.
Online and hybrid students need to be present and actively participating in their learning. Having the camera on and being visible to the teacher allows the teacher to note their attendance as present. Students who turn off their camera for extended periods of time and are not engaging in the lesson, or leave the class early will be marked absent.

News from the Nurse
Should My Child Go To School Today?
FLU SEASON
I want to remind everyone that flu season is just around the corner. I am asking that families consider getting a flu vaccine. We want to keep everyone as healthy as possible this year. Some of the symptoms for flu and COVID are the same and we do not want anyone to have to take extra steps in order to return to in person instruction. Children are typically out of school for a week with the flu. Please ask your doctor if you have concerns about getting the vaccine. Putting a reminder on your phone or calendar is a good way to remember to prioritize your health.
SEASONAL ALLERGIES
We are hearing from some parents that their children have seasonal allergy symptoms. In an effort to keep from having symptoms on the COVID Daily Checklist, please consider keeping their allergies under control by giving daily allergy medication. If you have concerns about this please consult your child's pediatrician about other options.
Please refer to the COVID - 19 Allergies vs. Flu Spreadsheet below.
Stay well,
