MB Henderson Media Center
Start of a new school year
Welcome new and veteran staff and teachers!
Welcome to our great learning community! I am Barbara Dowell, the library media specialist. This year, the Henderson Library Media Center promises to be even more of a support for the students, teachers, and parents. As always, the media center provides quality reading programs and materials, book promotions, technology derived interactive lessons, research skills, collaborative student centered lessons, celebrations, and inquiry driven units of study. Feel free to stop in for a tour or search strategy demonstration of our online catalog and other web based products. Also I would love to hear your ideas about how I can assist in helping to reinforce curriculum standards and objectives. I am looking forward to meeting your class as well.
Please follow the weekly library schedule that will be placed in your box each Friday.
Bluebonnet Reading Program in Progress
Grade 3-5 students who would like to learn the art of discriminating book genres and who love winning prizes should be reading books from the list of Bluebonnet books. 20 books of varying genres make up the selection. Voting for a favorite books takes place in January for students who have read at least 5 books. For students who read all 20, a special celebration will be held, along with prizes and other fun stuff.
Teachers will receive free books, poster, booklist, and other fun stuff too, for promoting the BB book program. It is a fabulous and effective way for getting students to read for pleasure. A tracking sheet will be collected for documentation of reading progress and activities will be presented in the library based on selected Bluebonnet books!
Texas 2X2 and Luminaries Book Program
Grade K-2 students may participate in this reading program only if teachers read aloud to them all 20 books from the 2X2 or Luminaries book list. The program begins now and continues to early spring. Teachers will be responsible for maintaining the list of books read. Practice activities will be presented in the library as to document reading progress. Books in English and Spanish are available for reading depending on list. In the spring, students will receive a backpack with free summer reading materials along with a special celebration party.
Teachers will also receive a class set of books as well as books for personal reading. Reading list and poster will be provided to participating teachers.
Earning By Learning
This year, the popular incentive based EBL reading program will be available to students in grades 2-4. That means that beginning on Sept. 6, students will begin taking the pre-assessment to begin the program. Students will be awarded $1 for each book read and assessment passed. Students can earn up to $20 for the Fall session and $20 for the spring session.
This program can only be successful if and when teachers promote the program by allowing students to read and test at school. Students will be given a username and password for testing. Our goal this year is for all student participants to earn the $20 for both sessions.
