Open Session
The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees held their regular monthly meeting in the BISD Board Room on Tuesday, September 21st, 2021.
Board Commendations
The Board commended Boerne ISD students and staff, as well as celebrated district-wide honors. Below are some of the honorees.
Zach Beshea- BMSN Assistant Principal
Boerne Middle School North Assistant Principal Zach Beshea has been selected as the Region 20 Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
Nominations are based upon exemplary performance and outstanding leadership. As a Region 20 winner, Mr. Beshea is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Assistant Principal of the Year.
Mr. Beshea, a six-year assistant principal, has been a member of the leadership team at BMSN since 2018.
Congratulations, Mr. Beshea!
Reece Dunham- CHS Senior
Champion and Boerne Academy Senior Reece Dunham recently won the Grand Champion title at the Texas Best Show Series in Waco. He also earned top honors in the wool category. There were over 30 participants in the Senior Category at the Waco event.
We are proud of Reece’s accomplishments and know that he will continue to have success at future events.
Congratulations, Reece.
Boerne ISD Student Advisory Council
The 2021-22 Boerne ISD Student Advisory Council is made up of a total of 34 student leaders from Champion and Boerne High School.
The students will be working with Dr. Price and district administration on important topics and events, as well as providing student feedback on district initiatives. The council will meet four times this school year, twice at Boerne High and twice at Champion High.
The Council held their first official meeting of the school year last week and discussed our long-range plan. We are excited to work with the students and hear their feedback.
Congratulations!
BMSS PE Partners
PE partners from Boerne Middle School South, Coach Travis Fallon, student-athletes Zach Garcia, and Katelyn Kliesing, and Life Skills Student-Athlete Carter Wingfield were honored.
With the assistance of Coach Fallon, Zach and Katelyn, Carter was able to compete in a recent Cross Country Meet at South in front of cheering fans.
This moment is what education is all about. Thank you to Coach Fallon, Zach Garcia, and Katelyn Kliesing, and congratulations to Carter Wingfield!
CHS Welding Students
Champion Welding students took on the challenge of creating 13 fully customized signs to be displayed at each of the Boerne ISD campuses.
These students put in hundreds of hours of work that went well past the instructional day to get these signs completed. This task tested their creative skills, CAD skills, Sheet Cam Programming, CNC Plasma Skills, Fabrication Skills, Welding Skills, and their ability to work as a team. The grind to the finish included selecting the correct powder coatings that matched each schools’ colors with UV protection, while also engineering each sign's frames to hold the sign in a way that maintenance could be done to them for years to come.
They truly went above and beyond on this huge district project to make sure every aspect was mastered. These students are a shining example of what Boerne ISD is all about.
Congratulations.
Lynnese Graves- CHS Teacher
Champion Architecture/Interior Design Teacher Lynnese Graves passed the National Kitchen and Bath Association Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer Certification exam! This is the first of three certifications. Next year, she will qualify to sit for the NKBA Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer exam which will entail having to design 4 kitchens and 4 baths in 72 hours and take a 150-question exam on the rest of the curriculum.
This is a great opportunity for Ms. Graves students to learn from one of the best in the nation. Best of luck and congratulations!
BISD Communications
We were truly surprised with the award and are honored to be recognized for our work.
Thank you!
BISD Fine Arts
Our Boerne ISD Band, Choir, and Orchestra Directors, as well as our music teachers have led their students to new heights in the past year. The quality of the work and performances our students have achieved is a direct result of our band directors and music teachers.
They also represented BISD well with their spectacular performance at our 2021 Convocation. We appreciate the time and effort our fine arts staff put into their work, especially during the summer months.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
Maintenance and Operations Tax Rate Lowered
The Board voted to lower the district’s Maintenance and Operations tax rate by nearly six cents for the 2021-22 school year.
The Maintenance and Operations tax rate will be $0.8806, down from $0.9379 last year, while the Interest and Sinking Fund will be $.324, up from $.314 last year.
The total tax rate for the 2021-22 school year will be $1.2046, which is effectively a 0.31 percent increase in the tax rate due to increased appraisal values.
*Note- The TEA sets the district's M&O Tax Rate.
BHS Band Boosters Thanked for Donation
The Band Boosters were publicly thanked by the board for the six-figure trailer donation. Greyhound Band Director Dani Person was also on hand and was recognized by the Board as well.
Superintendent's Report
-Boerne ISD achieved 94% student attendance this week. We have one of the highest, if not the highest student attendance rate in the San Antonio area.
-Both the Boerne and Champion homecoming parades were spectacular and were very well attended. The atmosphere was very celebratory and it felt like we were back to normal.
-The Boerne ISD Student Advisory met for the first time last week. They were shown the Boerne ISD long-range plan and discussed it with Dr. Price and Dr. Stewart. The council will work with the Superintendent and our administration on important topics and will be able to give their feedback.
-Hold Harmless was put in place last year, which was supposed to ensure that we didn't lose funding due to COVID-19. The formula kept changing throughout the school year. Due to those formula changes Boerne ISD will be forced to pay $2.1 million from last school year, which we didn't expect to pay. Our expected and continued growth of over 10,000 students will help Boerne ISD with funding this school year. Thanks to our student growth, we will not be in recapture this school year.
-Most school districts have not started Remote Conferencing as of yet. Boerne ISD started it on the first day of school and it has improved since day one. We have been leaders across the state with our implementation of Remote Conferencing, with other school districts requesting our assistance in helping plan their Remote Conferencing.
-SB 15 was signed by Governor Abbott allowing school districts to offer virtual learning. The bill offered no additional funding for virtual learning. For a variety of reasons, Boerne ISD will not offer virtual learning at this time.
