November 2023
A Message from Ms. Hartung and Mrs. Mecca...
Dear L-T Families,
Happy November 2023! As we transition into the crisp November days ahead, it's the perfect time to reflect on the wonderful moments that filled L-T during October.
During October, L-T students and staff showed support for Unity Day by wearing orange on Wednesday, October 18th, and celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 23rd through October 27th. Both events encouraged students to make wise, healthy choices. Curt from Homestead Farms visited first grade and taught them about pumpkins and apples. Students were excited to pick their own pumpkin in the L-T pumpkin patch. Kindergarten students went on their first field trip to Barton Orchards. The trip included pumpkin and apple picking and a hay ride. Finally, the month concluded with L-T's Fall Parade. Students were excited to parade around the front oval while parents/guardians cheered them on!
As we look ahead to November, here are a few highlights:
- Tuesday, November 7- Election Day/ Superintendent's Conference Day: No Students

Health Office Update
A Message from Mrs. Russo...
The Vision and Hearing screenings are well underway. When a grade is completed, parents will receive a form letter indicating the results in your child's take home folder. If a referral is required, be on the look out for a letter in the mail. Please follow up with an ophthalmologist and return the form to the health office when completed.
November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes. This year's focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes health problems. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. It affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth. Managing your diabetes as soon as possible after diagnosis may help prevent diabetes health problems. Take charge of your HEALTH!

TWIST Highlight of the Month
During the month of October, we focused on Tolerance through our PBIS assembly, explored the unique nature of our families through our Unity Day project, learned how to have short conversations in Spanish at lunchtime, and our faculty and staff read aloud Finding Your Spot in the World: A Story About Diversity. We also participated in Red Ribbon week during the last week of October. The theme “Be Kind to your Mind” encourages students and families to make positive choices that care for their mind, body and heart.
During November, we will focus on making Wise Choices at school, home, and in our community! Classes will also participate in our “I was caught making a Wise Choice!” initiative, where students have the opportunity to acknowledge classmates for making Wise Choices throughout the month. Wise Choices strategy of the month is Remember to stop, think and act!
Second Step
Hello LT Families! This month we are beginning the second unit of our Second Step Program. This unit is focused on Emotion Management. In this unit, our students will learn how to identify and label their own and other’s emotions, use emotion management strategies to calm strong feelings and manage their stress.
Kindergarteners will learn to use body language and context clues to figure out how someone is feeling. They’ll also learn to use slow breathing as a way to help themselves feel calm when they encounter strong feelings.
First Graders will be learning that by looking at a person’s face and body, as well as thinking about what’s going on in the situation, they can tell a lot about their friends and people around them. They will also learn about a new strategy for feeling calm when they get frustrated: slow counting.
Second Graders will learn about words to describe their feelings and new ways to help themselves feel calm.
Third Graders will be learning that emotions give us information about what we want or need and that there are different intensities of emotions such as happiness, sadness and frustration. Additionally, they will learn how, when, and where to take a break in different situations as a way to manage a strong emotion.
Fourth graders will learn that our brain works best when the logic and emotion centers are balanced and working together, what it means to rethink a situation and how it can help them calm strong emotions.
Fifth Graders will be learning how to identify things that a person can or can’t change in a recurring situation that causes them to feel a strong emotion. Then they will focus on the things that can be changed in order to recommend something they or someone else could think or do differently to manage their emotions in the future.
