COUNSELOR'S CORNER
CREATE:
Have you noticed that once your children arrived, your time was no longer your own? Today parents try to be superparents, involved in every aspect of their children's lives. They want their kids to be involved in activities and excel at school, have healthy self-esteem and be protected from the trials and tribulations of life. On top of this, many parents are single parents or working parents or both.
That's why it is important to take care of yourself and to set your expectations lower so you can achieve them. Learn to involve your family members in helping with the logistics of life. Be realistic about your budget. Know the difference between your children's wants and their needs. You don't have to buy designer clothes or vacation in an expensive resort to fulfill your children.
HOLD:
The family meeting is a time set aside once a week on the same day. It's a place where family members sit down together and talk about whatever is on their minds. Most family meetings have an agenda, usually consisting of appreciations, old business, problem solving, scheduling, and a fun activity together. During this time family members can air feelings, compliment one another, and have conversations.
ESTABLISH:
One of the most powerful forms of limit setting that parents can do with their children is to create routines. Children enjoy routines and respond favorably to them. The younger the child, the more comforting the routine.
In the beginning you create the routines. When you are kind and firm, the routines you set will work until children get a little older and are ready to push the limit.
Here are some examples:
House cleaning: Pick a time each week to clean the house.
Meal planning and preparation: One person cooks, another assists, another sets the table, another cleans up.
Grocery shopping: Let each family member choose from the master list the items they want to find in the grocery store.
Brushing teeth: When children are young, hey need your help to brush their teeth. Do it with them and help them floss.
