Looking for a few volunteer Crews!
Library Focus Groups
We are looking for a few upper and lower grade Crews to volunteer to help us with a library project in the next few weeks. Our intern, Amy, has been working on a long term assessment study of the library. As part of this, we want to run focus groups in which students share their thoughts about our library. The focus group will be a 30 minute guided discussion on student perceptions of the library. We will use their feedback to help us plan our program. Please let us know if this is something you would like to participate in. Thank you! Interested? Email Amanda C. or Susan.
UG Book Pick - The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds
Matt's been wearing a black suit every day since his mom passed away, but that's not why he's wearing it. He has a new gig at the local funeral home so he can help out his dad, who can't handle the bills or much of anything else these days. Life is pretty rough, but then he meets Lovey. She's been through more crazy stuff than anyone, but she never cries. She's tough, like Matt wants to be.
"A vivid, satisfying and ultimately upbeat tale of grief, redemption and grace." -Kirkus Reviews
Available in the library.
LG Book Pick - Blackbird Fly by Erin Entrada Kelly
Apple has always felt a little different from her classmates. She and her mother moved to Louisiana from the Philippines when she was little, and her mother still cooks Filipino foods and chastises Apple for becoming “too American.” When Apple’s friends turn on her, Apple turns to music. If she can just save enough to buy a guitar and learn to play, maybe she can change herself. It might be the music that saves her . . . or it might be her two new friends, who show her how special she really is.
“Kelly skillfully weaves together the story of misfit Apple, her love of music, and a budding romance with a new boy at school, while never losing focus on the central issue of what it is like to be the ‘other.’” — Booklist
