Belarus is our Motherland, a small, beautiful country.
Sometimes people from other countries call Belarus “White Russia».
Belarus as a geographic name was mentioned in 14-15th century.
It is situated in Eastern Europe, between Poland and Russia.
The Republic borders on Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
It has an area of more than 200 thousand square kilometers
Its population is about 10 million people.

The largest cities in Belarus are Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, and Mogilev. It's capital is Minsk, with the population of about two million people.
Nature of Belarus
Belarussian`s natural scenery is wide, lonely plains covered with hills, and many lakes and forests.
The highest place in Belarus is the mount Dzerzhinskaya (345m) in Minsk region
Belarus has a beautiful nature.
One third of the Republic's territory is covered with forests.
The largest of them are called pushchas.
The most beautiful is the Belovezhskaya, the Nalibokskaya which have rich flora and fauna.
You can see elks, wolves, hears, foxes, millions of birds.
Belovezhskaya pushcha is famous for its European bison.
There are more than 3000 rivers in Belarus.
They flow into the Baltic Sea.
The chief rivers are the Dnieper, the Nieman, the Zapadnaya Dvina, the Pripyat.
Belarus is a lake country.There are more than 10800 lakes here.
Most of them are situated in the northern part of the republic.
The largest lake is the Naroch(80 sq km) and the deepest one is the Dolgoye(54 metres).
Legend about a Castle Hill
Once upon a time castle Kapyl castle towered on the mountain. The steep slopes of the river Kamenka saved the castle from its enemies. But one day a son of a sorceress, drowned in its waters. Enraged sorceress cursed the river and imprisoned it in the depths of the mountain and the castle came the decline from then Today the source that gushes out of the mountain recalls about the legend. Old people say that if you dig up the mountain, the water will flood the whole neighborhood Kamenka.
