Superstars!
Our chaperones were amazing, and it felt like we were one big family on an apple picking excursion! Thank you all for your time, and love.
Our classroom volunteers started this week, during our Literacy Centers. They have been an amazing help, as we have transitioned to Guided Reading groups. I still have open slots for Monday/Friday 9:50-10:50, if anyone else is interested.
A Look At Our Week....
Guided Reading is under way in our literacy hour. Your child will start to find those Level A readers (or whatever level your child is bringing home) easier as we teach them strategies over the coming weeks to read words. A new load of sight words will be coming home this week, keep working with your child on these to support their reading development. Return the readers each day so that we can switch them out for a different one. As I am progress monitoring your children's literacy skills, I am excited to see good growth in their phonemic awareness and reading behaviors. Y'all are doing an amazing job at home, thank you!
In Math later this week, we will be measuring pumpkins using cubes and using such vocabulary as: more, less, fewer, equal, long, short. We will be recording and comparing our measurements. In addition to measurement, we continue to work on skills such as accurate object counting, representing an amount with a numeral, number recognition etc.
Aaron Reynolds, the author of "Creepy Carrots" is visiting Claxton on Wednesday. We will be reading this book over the next week, and our librarian has been reading them his newest installment. We love author visits! Ask your child, next weekend, to tell you the story of "Creepy Carrots". Retelling a story is an important skill that we work on throughout the year in Kindergarten.
After the tremendous success of partnering as "Writing Buddies" with Ms. Morgan's 2nd grade class a couple of weeks ago.....This week we will begin our "Reading Buddies" partnerships with Ms. McCarthy's 3rd grade class. It is so lovely to be able to partner up with the classes of older siblings, and a pleasure to watch the older children being kind to their little charges. Everyone of them serves as a role model to our children, they always bring their "best selves" to these occasions. I love our school community!
In Writing, we have begun to write Storybooks, after finishing our unit on Teaching books. We are really working on adding words to our pictures at the moment.
During Choice Time this week, we will be turning our Pretend Play center into a Farm. We will be constructing props and scenery etc in our Arts and Crafts center, and using the children's ideas to drive the action. If any of you have anything that might be useful to a Farm center, send it in (we'll send it back after a month or so!) Items such as little rakes, or trowels, little wheelbarrow, anything that might be found on a farm. If any of you really like facilitating this type of open exploratory learning you are welcome to join us during Choice Time this week, Wednesday-Friday at 1:30 .
