Math Update

In Math this week, we are working on Chapter 11/Measurement. Most of this short unit is a review of measuring capacity of liquids using liters and milliliters, and measuring mass using grams and kilograms. We have covered both of those concepts during our matter unit in Science. This week, we will work on telling time to the minute and time intervals of one hour or less. Our class will also be learning about gallons, quarts, pints, and cups which is not covered in our My Math book. We will plan to take the test on this chapter during the week that we return from Spring Break.

ELA Update

Our class will begin a study of text structures used in non-fiction and fiction texts. Authors must decide what type of text structure they want to use in order to share information in a non-fiction text or as part of a story in a fiction text. Text structures include: description, cause and effect, sequence of events, compare and contrast, and problem and solution. We will also use these text structures in our writing.

We will continue to focus on using different ways to find context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a paragraph. This week, we will focus on dictionary definitions of words and decide which definition works best with the word in our paragraph.

In our grammar study, we will focus on using correct capitalization as well as commas in the correct places.

There will not be a Spelling List this week, since it is a short week.

Science Update

This week in Science, students will continue with Chapter 1/Living Things Grow and Change. Their focus will be on food chains. A test on this unit will be the week after Spring Break. If you have questions about Science, please contact Mrs. Starkey at

Social Studies Update

This week, we will continue with Chapter 8/A Nation Divided. This is an interesting chapter about the Civil War and how it affected the people of South Carolina and the country. We have been making a list of the differences between the North/Union and the South/Confederacy. It has been interesting to see how different the two parts of the country were at this time in history. We will continue with this chapter until after Spring Break.
