Today we will be identifying instrument pictures and words and their different groups. There are 4 different groups of instruments based upon how the instrument makes sound or how it is played. Does it use wood? Does it use brass? Do you beat it to make sound? Does it have strings?

There are 4 different types of instruments. These are called instrument families. There are 4 families, the Strings, the Woodwinds, the Brasswinds, and the Percussion.
The first instrument family is the string family. All of the instruments in the string family use strings to vibrate to make the sound. The smallest instrument is the violin. It is also the highest sounding instrument. The next biggest instrument is the viola. It is very similar to the violin but it is bigger, and a little lower. The violin and the viola use a bow to help the strings vibrate. The next instrument in the string family is the guitar. The guitar can be played by plucking the strings with the fingers. The next string instrument that you will see is the piano. The piano uses strings and when you push the keys it makes a hammer hit the strings and vibrate.
The next instrument family is woodwind. These are instruments that use wood and air to create the sound. The first instrument is a flute. it is the only woodwind instrument that does not use actual wood. This is because it was originally made of wood back in the 1500's and 1600's. It was not until the 1700's that metal was used more commonly for the flute. The next woodwind instrument is a clarinet. It uses a wood piece called a reed. The reed vibrates against the plastic mouthpiece and creates a vibration that moves down the instrument and makes the sound. Although the saxophone looks like a brass instrument in color, it is a woodwind instrument because of the reed.
The next instrument family is the brass family. They all use a metal called brass in their instruments to help make the sound. All of the brass instruments have a mouthpiece that you buzz into to make the vibrations. The smallest brass instrument is the trumpet. It has a higher pitch. The next instrument you see is the trombone. The trombone is bigger, so it is lower than the trumpet. It is also the only brass instrument that uses a slide to make the different pitches. One of the lowest brass instruments is the tuba. It stands about 3 feet tall and weighs at least 30 pounds.
The last instrument family is the percussion. If you can beat it, hit it, or strike the instrument then it is a percussion instrument. One of the percussion instruments I have for you here is the snare drum. It is one of the most common percussion instruments. You beat the snare drum with wooden sticks to make the snares rattle and to make the vibrations sound. The next instrument is the bass drum. The bass drum is played by beating it with a special mallet to help the sound vibrate. It is very big, so the sound is very low. Another percussion instrument is the triangle. It is played by striking it with a metal stick. The tambourine is played by hitting it against something or with your hand to get the jingles to vibrate. The gong is beat with a special gong mallet to draw out the vibrations of it. The last percussion instrument is the xylophone. It is a pitched percussion instrument, which means that it creates different pitches by beating it with wood or yarn mallets to create a melody.

In order for you to identify the instrument families, you have a short activity to practice. Take out the envelope that says 1st Grade Music on it. It has puzzle pieces in it. Put the puzzles together to make different instruments. When you get done, you should have 14 different puzzles. When you get those puzzles done, please turn the pictures over and notice the words. Group the words together by putting all of the same color stickers in each group. You should have four different color groups when you get done.
