CHARACTER CORNER
Generosity is the willingness to share with others.
“We should give as we would receive - cheerfully, quickly, and without hesitation; for there is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.” - Seneca
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
It's hard to believe we are nearing the end of the semester. So many things are different but our commitment to you and your children remains the same.
You have the opportunity to change your Learning Option for 3rd nine weeks. Complete this form IF you want to CHANGE your Learning Option for 3rd nine weeks. If you want to remain the same, do nothing. Please, only enter your child's name one time!
Your options remain the same,
Virtual school beginning 3rd nine weeks - completely at home using Edgenuity lessons and assignments supplemented by Bumpus teachers dedicated solely to Virtual School.
Students who select virtual school can also come on campus during the appropriate time period for the following courses: Math Team 6, 7, 8; Bands; Choirs; 8th grade Foreign Language; and Remediation. This is called Blended Learning. It is a Blend of Virtual and Face to Face for that particular class.
Face to Face school, F2F, beginning 3rd nine weeks - F2F school can move to a staggered schedule where students come to the school building 2 days a week, M/Th or T/F, based on the first letter of their last name and remain home the other three days of the school week. Assignments and videos are sent through Google Classroom to the students. F2F can also move to complete remote learning for all students, as well as teachers, five days a week.
Thanks for your support in keeping our school and students safe. We ask that you continue to take your child's temperature each morning and to monitor them for symptoms of COVID.
You are doing a fantastic job and I thank you.
Dr. Tamala R. Maddox
Principal

NEWS FROM OUR COUNSELORS
Holidays can bring up many feelings of anticipation and apprehension for everyone. This is particularly true for tweens and teens who already are in an emotionally charged stage. While they may count the days until winter break arrives, many teens find that holiday excitement brings on seasonal stress. End of semester exams and pressure to get good grades, coupled with gift buying dilemmas and stressful family get-togethers increase anxiety levels, making it difficult to cope.
7 tips to help teens cope with holiday stress
- Stick to household routines. Observe regular mealtimes and bedtimes whenever possible. Ease back into the school routine with some light studying the week before school starts.
- Give teens some control over their schedule. Work out time for teens to celebrate with friends and discuss what festivities they can opt out of.
- Make room for downtime and exercise. Include quiet activities such as a movie night. Encourage teens to exercise every day — anything from ice skating to taking a walk.
- Get teens involved. Assign responsibilities for holiday planning; ask them to help with shopping, decorating or cooking. Encourage them to volunteer for a good cause such as a food bank or a toy drive.
- Manage gift expectations. Discuss a realistic gift list for your teen. Set a budget for their gifts for friends and family, and encourage them to make some of their presents.
- Limit social media and screen time. Too much time on social media or with video games can cause sensory overload and encourages temper flareups. Social media in particular can set kids up for unrealistic comparisons with others’ holiday experiences.
- Take care of yourself. If you’re overtaxed as a parent, your kids will sense it. Make time for self-care and show holiday spirit with balanced expectations and activity levels.

ATTENDANCE - MRS. PHILLIPS
Attendance questions? Please email Mrs. Phillips at aphillips@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268
· A parent/doctor note is still required within three (3) days of returning in order to excuse an absence or check-in/out and can be dropped in the excuse boxes in the main lobby or throughout the school. Please include the student’s full name on the parent note.
· ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school for such events as family events, trips, dance recitals, travel sports, etc., it is necessary for them to complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in within 3 days of the absence, so that the absence may be excused. This form is available on the Bumpus Middle School website, or in the 2nd floor office.
There is a section on the form to be completed, with the reason for the absence, and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the 2nd Floor Office for administrator approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. After the signature is obtained, Mrs. Phillips in the 2nd office will enter the absence into INow. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence and the form emailed to Mrs. Phillips).
CHROMEBOOKS
CHROMEBOOKS
Students Tip: Make sure your Chromebook is updated.
How to UPDATE CHROMEBOOKS:
1. Click the bottom right corner of the Chrome OS desktop (It shows the time).
2. Select the Settings icon (It looks like a gear).
3. Click About Chrome OS (bottom left).
4. Click Check for Updates.
5. To apply the update, click the arrow icon and select Restart to Update.
You may be able to fix some Chromebook problems yourself. Watch this video for great tips and save yourself a trip to the school and a week of downtime.
BEFORE you consider bringing your Chromebook up to the school for repair, keep in mind a few important details:
The Chromebook repair process will take longer than usual due to the precautions our staff will take to stay safe. This includes a quarantine time period before we pass it off to the technician.
Only critical repairs will be processed at this time (as in, the Chromebook doesn't work and learning can't take place). Unnecessary or uncritical repairs will be sent back to the student.
After completing the Chromebook repair request, you may drop off your device at the front desk during school during office hours.
You will want to remember this year! Order your yearbook on MySchoolFees! October 5- December 18: Price is $45; December 19-January 22: Price is $60
