School Attendance Matters
Foskett Ranch is committed to your student’s success, and having your child attend school regularly is vital to this success. Here are some things to consider when scheduling family activities or planned student absences.
The California Legislature defines truancy as a student that misses more than 30 minutes of instruction without an excuse three times during the school year. Schools are required to document these truancies. The intention is to emphasize the importance of school attendance and minimize interference with instruction.
Therefore if a student misses more than three days, or is 30 minutes tardy three times in a school year, without a documented excuse reported by their guardian, he/she is considered truant, and a truancy letter is mailed home.
Absences that are considered excused can include: illness, court date, family funeral, medical appointment. Excessive excused absences (more than 10 days in a school year) can result in a letter from the school.
Reporting an Absence:
As soon as you know your child will not be at school you can report their absence easily by:
- Calling the office at (916) 434-5255. If it is after normal school hours you can leave a message.
- Sending an email through the school website (be sure you refresh the page) at http://fres.wpusd.org/Contact-Us/Report-an-Absence-/index.html
- Through our school app by choosing the button that says "Absences" and follow the instructions. If you have a smartphone and the school app you can easily report an absence from anywhere, anytime.
Travel Study/Short Term Independent Study:
If you know your child will be gone at least 5 consecutive days from school due to emergencies, vacation or illness he/she may be eligible for a short term independent study (travel study). A travel study will give your child an opportunity to complete his/her work for the set time and receive full school credit for time away. If you would like to know more about a travel study, please talk with our office staff.
If you have any questions about your students attendance or the information in this letter, please call the school office at (916) 434-5255.
PTO
Your PTO
School is back in session and your PTO is hard at work planning some amazing fundraisers and fun events. A new slate of PTO Officers has been installed for this year:
Kirsten Livingston – President
Beth Wilson – Vice President
Christine Shaghafi – Secretary
Jan Bedwell – Treasurer
Please come out and support these parents that are volunteering their time to make this school year a fun one. PTO Meetings are generally the first Tuesday of the month @6:30pm in the Teacher’s Lounge. FREE child care is provided for potty trained children. Please come and participate in the planning for your child’s school.
You should know that the PTO will only have ONE big fundraiser this year. No more COOKIE DOUGH/CATALOG sales fundraiser! Our ONLY big fundraiser will be the APEX Fun Run to be held 9/9 – 9/19. There will be other smaller fundraisers such as Box Tops Collections/Receipt Scanning, Dine Out Nights and Potter Voucher Sales. Money raised from these events will go towards new Technology and Safety equipment, the School App, Library Books, Teachers Classroom Spending Accounts, Assemblies, Planners and Folders, Family Fun Nights and many other things.

APEX Fun Run
The APEX Fun Run will begin accepting pledges on 9/9. The actual run will be on 9/19 this year. It has been moved up earlier in the year (usually held in the Spring) because it is the ONLY big fundraiser this year. This really needs to be a successful campaign as it needs to cover expenses that have historically been covered by two Big fundraisers a year. The goal is to make it ONE and DONE this year.
