Winter Happenings & Highlights
Gabe the Weathercaster Look out, local meteorologists! A Panther Valley High School student is looking to take your job! 10th grader Gabe Watterson puts together a short weekend forecast in class with the help of his teachers. What makes this extra special is the fact that Gabe is a student with autism through CLIU and struggles with speech and verbal communication. Sometimes it takes a creative exercise or hobby to bring out the best in our special needs students. | 911 Simulator TrainingAs kids, we learn when to dial 911 and when it’s appropriate to call for police or paramedics. But it’s not as easy for special needs children to identify an emergent situation and know how to call for help. That’s why our IU21 teachers at Panther Valley Intermediate in Carbon County are teaching their children how to interact with a dispatcher. Maybe the most important lesson of the day was teaching them when NOT to call 911. | Schnecksville DHH Winter Olympians The 2022 Winter Olympics showcased the best talent from around the world in competitions like figure skating, curling and ski jumping! But our K-5 deaf and hard of hearing students from Schnecksville Elementary are letting everyone know they have skills, too! Watch them participate in classroom-sized events with the same olympic spirit of winning! |

Code Jam 2022 DeSales University and professor Dr. Pranshu Gupta hosted Intermediate Units 20 and 21 for the 2022 Code Jam Competition. This contest is all about speed! Whoever can solve the most programming/coding problems wins. Teams are put under a two hour time limit. What makes this competition so important for students is the pressure they’re under, and going up against other students they would otherwise not meet or learn from. | MaDCom 2022 Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 is proud to have hosted some intelligent middle school students from the region for our 2022 Media and Design Competition. We brought in five judges to rule on multiple categories such as graphic design, web design, programming and animation. Check out what some of our students created! | Jenn's House Makes $25,000 Donation The Carbon Lehigh Special Needs Children's Foundation is happy and honored to receive a $25,000 from Richard Dillman and his non-profit Jenn's House. For over 20 years, Dillman provided affordable short-term stays to families of hospital patients in the Lehigh Valley. In February 2021, he decided to discontinue Jenn's House and has spent the last year donating the remaining funds to over 10 organizations. The special needs foundation was the final organization Dillman chose to enrich with a Jenn's House donation. |
