Mystery Podcasts for Middle School
Listening to podcasts can improve listening skills. As you plan for meaningful and engaging activities in May, consider having students listen to a mystery podcast. The Mars Patel podcast is highly recommended and very well done. The link below will direct you to some free educational materials, but there are also many options on Teacher Pay Teachers to pair with this listening activity.
Geography Quiz - City Guesser
City Guesser is a geography based quiz game designed to test geography knowledge. The way City guesser works is simple: the class is provided with brief video footage of a specific location and students guess the name of that location using the provided map. City Guesser supports both individual and multiplayer game modes allowing users to complete against friends and players from all around the world.
City Guesser is free and does not require ay sign up or software download. As a teacher, you can use this game to develop student geographical literacy, sharpen mapping skills, improve spatial awareness, and boost cultural literacy.

Education Innovations
We are all acutely aware that pandemic learning loss will require all of us to tap into our creativity to re-imagine some of our long held traditions in education. I would like to present my readers with some ideas that schools are piloting to develop a new academic recipe that might be worth considering. Please note that these ideas are not necessarily ones that I endorse, but rather food for thought as schools search for inspiration.
This month's innovation comes from a school in Minnesota. Here is their creative idea:
- As of April 20, students with passing grades have the option to stay at home on Wednesdays, while those with a "D" letter grade or lower must come to school for enhanced support. It’s called W.I.N. Wednesday - ("What I Need").

What excellent teachers are saying about professional growth
What are the characteristics of an excellent.....truly life-changing teacher? Surveys most often reference a teacher who possesses a contagious passion for learning, believes their students can succeed - and always knows when to be tough to help students reach their full potential.
Does the research agree? How can teachers refine their practices, improve their craft, and make a significant - or even life-altering - contribution to the lives of their students?
Nearly two dozen studies were compiled to come up with the list included in the Edutopia article below.
