Room 26 Weekly News
January 25, 2016
Announcements
- I will be out of the class at a professional development training on Thursday, January 28th.
- This is the last week of Semester One. There will be a lot of district testing. Please encourage your students to get a good night's sleep each night and to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch with protein items each day!
Language Arts
Next week, we will taking a multi-day post test for reading comprehension. There will also be a narrative essay to write in two sessions. These are both assessments that all fifth graders take in the SMUSD, and are heavily weighted on the report card. This is the third group of unit exams that will make up 50% of the report card in these areas: comprehension of literature, comprehension of informational text, and three genres of writing: opinion, informative, and narrative.
The students have answered many similar comprehension questions in class, have worked with word parts, and have been encouraged to use the text to locate evidence to answer the questions. I can only encourage them to take their time, and to read the questions carefully to be sure all of the question is being answered.
Math
More, and more, and moooorrree assessments. We began our fraction unit in October, and have finished it. This is considered a "year long" focus for fifth graders. We will take the midpoint assessment, a post test on fractions, and a performance task which has a lot of word problems. Students will need to write equations by extracting information from word problems, make models, show, and explain their reasoning for all operations using fractions.
There is no new learning this week, but homework will come home to keep their brains active with operations using fractions.
Social Studies
The American Revolution is about to begin in room 26. All three colony regions will now band together to fight agains the King of England. There are several events that lead up to the actual war, and we will follow a timeline to get there beginning this week.
The next States & Capitals quiz will be next Friday, February 5. We already have 18 students who have passed all 50 and several who are VERY close!! Great job, Room 26!! There are several helpful online games and programs (see my website) your child can use to memorize the states and capitals!
