Summit SPARKS News
MARCH 2020
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Summit Families,
It is hard to believe that March is already here. It won’t be long before the warm weather arrives and the end of year rush begins! As you may know, this is the time of year that students make the most academic and social learning improvements. Very soon the weather will change with spring right around the corner. It can be challenging to keep our children focused on learning. What can you do to make school a top priority for your child? Keep these ideas in mind:
- Make attendance your number one priority. Let your child know that unless they are sick, they must attend school (and be on time.) Make an effort to schedule appointments after school hours.
- Show you care. Talk about school activities and projects. Make an effort to attend as many school events as you can.
- Remain positive. Try to set a positive example for your child, even when your own day has been challenging. If you show a positive attitude about your work, your child may feel better about their own.
This month is also Women’s History Month. We will be celebrating and amplifying women’s contributions to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Camp Invention is returning to Reynoldsburg City School District!
In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Summit Road STEM Elem School is pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering grades K through 6th. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure provides lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children rotate through several hands-on activities each day while using teamwork, creative thinking and problem-solving skills to invent unique solutions to real-world challenges. Camp Invention is from June 15th - 19th here at Summit Road Elementary with an all-new 2020 program, Elevate!
During this program, young innovators will:
- Build a cityscape out of upcycled materials, navigate planes through a storm and take apart a robot they’ll bring home at the end of the program.
- Learn the value of their creativity as they sketch and build prototypes, design logos, market their invention and protect their intellectual property.
- Collaborate and discover solutions to protect the Earth’s ecosystems as they compete in zipline races, explore energy conservation and help wildlife habitats.
- Discover the great inventors behind their favorite sports, play high-energy games and design the ultimate sports complex.
Camp Invention’s activities give participants the opportunity to explore, create and build confidence as they bring their biggest ideas to life.
Local educators facilitate the program and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

Preparing for COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
The health and safety of our students, staff and families is paramount in Reynoldsburg City Schools, and we continue to monitor the situation regarding COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus) and follow the guidance provided by local and federal health officials.
While there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ohio at this time, health officials have recommended reviewing and refining emergency operation plans that could be used in the event of an infectious disease outbreak. This includes providing educational continuity in the event of school closures. Reynoldsburg City Schools is working with other local school districts and the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio to proactively review these plans and their coordination with local and state health agencies.
As always, we remain committed to ensuring the safety of students, staff and visitors to all of our schools. We remind everyone to be diligent about the usual preventative measures such as frequent and thorough hand washing and staying home when feeling ill.
