Weekly Hellos
We started our new PBL on hunger and fresh foods this week. The class is learning that healthy and fresh foods cost a lot more than processed foods. We tried budgeting three healthy meals for one day on just $4.58 like Texans that need assistance would have to do. It. Was. Hard!!!
We'll continue to explore the topic of hunger in America, research regarding growing bodies and healthy food, and learn about gardening to grow for others.
We also started our twice monthly trips to Innovation Station! Ask your child about which station they explored. It was really fun and we can't wait to do it again!!
Take a look below for more information about our upcoming week.
Various Things to Read and Respond To
Round Rock Area Serving Center Field Trip
Our field trip to the RR Serving Center is on Thursday, Jan. 19th. We will leave the school at 9:15. If you would like to meet us at the RRASC, please park on the street and we'll meet you there around 9:30. We are going to tour the food pantry and learn about their community gardens. All students should be dressed in their WHITE NINJA PIG t-shirts we made. It's not too late to send in monetary donations for the RRASC!

Homework News
As always, there will be math to work on and reading for fun is always a good thing.
Class Events
Writing Workshop- Students will begin a new 3 week unit on fantasy writing. We'll take what we know about fiction stories and add in protagonists (heroes), goals (something to achieve), obstacles (things that block the hero from achieving the goal) and consequences (what happens at the end when the goal is/isn't met).
**We wrote goals the first week and wrote about hunger the second week. I'm hoping to use the next two weeks to write those fantasy stories!)
Grammar- We have been working on combining two simple sentences and how to combine compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions ( use a comma then put the word "and, but, because, so"). It all sounds complicated but your kids are doing really well!
Math- We took a bit longer finishing area of irregular shapes. We have moved back into fractions. Now we'll look at congruent shapes or number lines and compare fractional parts to see which is more/less/equal. Equivalent fractions is always fun when you can get hands-on time with tools and talk about what's going on. It's mind blowing that the larger the denominator- the smaller the bit you get.
Social Studies & Science: We are weaving our PBL project in and out of both subjects right now. We are learning about soil formation through weathering & critter help. We are also looking at decomposition of plant & animal material into compost. This ties in well with our garden focus.
