What Sets ACS Apart?
Remote Learning: How is ACS Handling It?
Authentic Learning Experiences
At Aurora Community School, we believe true learning happens when students can authentically engage in life experiences. It's the exact reason our curriculum is grounded in Project Based Learning! Students have small, hands-on learning experiences everyday...that make what they learn in books come to life; and at the end of each trimester, students have the opportunity to go on 3-5 day excursions, that connect their learning to the real world!
But, while we aren't physically together, we've been thinking of different ways to make the learning engaging (as you've seen in previous newsletters). However, this past weekend, we had the opportunity to engage our personal students in an experience that will set them up as a professional in the world: hiring!
Any person interested in working at Aurora Community School goes through a robust 3-step process. We want to make sure that we have the just right people in front of our students! In the last step, a panel of staff members, families, and students get to ask the questions that matter to them; and, together, they make a recommendation for hiring.
In one of the interviews this weekend, one of the candidates asked a 6th grader what the best thing about ACS has been for her, and Jahara replied:
"(ACS) is very different from my elementary school because the topics we talk about in our classes are way different than what we talked about in elementary. We didn’t talk about what was going on in the world. I feel more exposed to things in the world at ACS."
Lego Challenge: GIFT CARD!
Challenge: Pressure-Proof Structure
Imagine that your LEGO person is working in a mine underground deep inside the Earth. Create a shelter for the mine workers that will withstand the pressure of the earth and protect miners from a cave-in. As a family unit, discuss ways in which you can make your structure strong enough that it can withstand a lot of force.
The pressure in the core of the earth is very high, and pushes on structures from all
angles, so every part of the build will need to be extremely strong.
Test your structure using a heavy item from your house such as small weights etc.
Test the top, sides and bottom of the structure you have built to see if it can withstand pressure from every angle.
When you have tested your structure, submit a video of you testing your structure and/or a picture of your structure prior to your test. Send your video to Ashley (awilliamson@auroracommunityk8.org)!
There's a $10 gift card up for grabs from the person with the strongest structure!
