Pie Sales - Last Chance
Thank you for supporting the senior class during the annual pie fundraiser! Through the generosity of our families and friends we're only a couple hundred dollars away from our goal of $3,000. That is incredible and will help the Grad Night Committee wrap up major fundraising for the year. To help us get to our goal, we're leaving the online pie store open until 7 pm tonight (Monday, Oct 21). In case you missed out on the sale, there’s still time to get your last minute cobbler at https://isb-grad-night-2020.weeblysite.com/s/shop. Prize winners will be announced this week as soon as we get the final orders tallied. Thank you again!

College Financial Planning Seminar - Thursday, Oct. 24th
On Thursday, October 24th from 6:30 to 7:30pm ISB will host a College Financial Planning Seminar. The target audience is families with students in grades 9-12. Tim Tank, a former school counselor who now works as a financial planner for Morgan Stanley, will discuss key components of the financial aid system that will give you the building blocks to create an effective college funding game plan.
Topics to be covered include:
- Financial Aid & Funding Options
- FAFSA & CSS Profile strategies
- How to maximize merit and need-based financial aid
- How to avoid excess loans
This presentation is a great starting point for parents to get informed about the costs and opportunities associated with planning for college. The college admission process and financial planning process are connected and with the right strategy you could potentially lower the cost of attendance for your student.
Sojourn to the Past
This spring break, ISB students have the opportunity to participate in Sojourn to the Past, a week-long trip to civil rights memorials, museums, and landmarks accompanied by well-known and forgotten figures from the civil rights movement. Students will gain tangible experience with this important period in American history through a variety of activities, lessons, and conversations with those who lived it and who are active in keeping the work alive in today's world. Jeff Steinberg, founder of the Sojourn Project, will be at ISB during access tutorial this Thursday, October 24th. Students in grades 10-12 can sign up to participate in his presentation and workshop and receive future information about trip itinerary, costs, and fundraising by filling out this Google form. To learn more about the trip and the Sojourn Project, visit http://www.sojournproject.org/.
This activity is not sponsored or endorsed by the Beaverton School District or the International School of Beaverton.

SMS Text
Do you want to receive a text message in case of school weather closures or school emergencies? In addition to SchoolMessenger emails and phone calls, BSD utilizes SMS (text) messages to send short, important notices to families. In order to receive text messages, parents/guardians must opt in with their cell phone. Your current mobile number must be on file in your child’s school records.
Using your cell phone, subscribe or opt-in to receive SMS by texting the word “YES” to 67587. Once the mobile number has been successfully subscribed, a confirmation message will be delivered to your cell phone.

Restaurant Deliveries
ISB only allows food delivery from family members during the school day. We do not allow pizza and other food deliveries to students during the school day, including services like UberEATS or GrubHub. Often this causes disruption to students' learning if the delivery arrives before or after the designated lunch period and requires supervision by a staff member, pulling them from other responsibilities.
Dress Up Day - Thursday, Oct. 31st
Students are invited to dress up in Halloween costumes or cultural dress on Thursday, October 31st. As an international community, we expect that students will dress in a manner that is respectful of their own and other cultures. As always, students are expected to adhere to the school dress code, particularly those related to safety and modesty. In addition, the following costumes/accessories are not allowed:
• Masks
• Dripping or gooey makeup/accessories
• Inflatable costumes
• Gangster, "sexy" or "bunny" costumes
• Costumes perpetuating stereotypes related to gender, race/ethnicity, or economic status
• Implements (hockey sticks, baseball bats, etc.)
• Weapons or look-alike weapons (daggers, scythes, swords, etc.)
Culture Week
Culture Week is a unique and special week that happens the first week of second semester at ISB. This year’s theme will be Sports & Leisure Around the World. There will be a keynote speaker to kick off the week, international snacks each day at lunches, a morning of workshops, a philanthropic activity, international dress day and the week will end with a festive international evening hosted by our student organizations. This year Culture Week will be January 28-31, 2020. Several of the events and activities for Culture Week are organized by a parent committee and your help is needed.
If you would like to be part of the planning team, the next meeting will be held in the College and Career Center (B103) on Monday, October 28 at 7:30 AM. Please check in at the office before heading to the meeting. The committee will meet once a month until winter break and then every week or two in January leading up to Culture Week. Please email cultureweekisb@gmail.com for more information.
35 presenters are needed to share their expertise during two 40-minute sessions on January 30, 2020. If you or someone you know would be able to present on a topic that relates to our Sports & Leisure theme, we would love to hear from you. Any topics with an international or multicultural theme would be a wonderful addition to the selection of workshops offered. Students, teachers, parents, and community members are instrumental in making Culture Week a success each year.
December 13 is the deadline for lining up all of the presenters for Culture Week. Please let us know if you are interested in presenting or leading an active session by emailing cultureweekisb@gmail.com. We appreciate your support to make this a memorable week for students and staff at ISB.
IB Corner
At ISB, teachers use the IB MYP criteria to determine the progress each student is making on the Beaverton School District learning targets. Log in to ParentVue to view the gradebooks of your student’s current teachers. You should be able to see scores entered into ParentVue.
At ISB, teachers use scores of 1-8 on each scored assignment or assessment. These scores are then converted to a letter grade for the semester grades. Each subject area has four criteria that students will receive feedback on throughout the year. Students should be receiving a rubric at the beginning of any major assessments, that outlines what will be expected of them. These rubrics are a good tool for students to use before they turn in an assignment, to ensure they have completed the assignment fully and to “grade” themselves. These criterion and rubrics are found in the Student's Planner and our website.
Now is a good time for students to begin reflecting on their learning and identifying areas in which they are strong and areas on which they may need to focus in order to meet their learning goals. Using the rubrics before and after turning in work, students are able to reflect on their growth. When talking to teachers about how to improve, students should use specific criterion as the basis for the question. Rather than, “How can I get an ‘A’,” students should ask “How can I improve my score in criterion A?” This allows the teacher to give specific advice about areas of improvement.
Learner Profile of the Month
This month, the Learner Profile focus is on being open-minded.
Definition: Learners understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.
As Learners, we all can reflect on the questions below:
Are you open to other people’s ideas, points of view, and culture?
Do you seek out new experiences?
Do you appreciate your own culture and background, while seeking information about the culture of others?
Are you willing to grow from new experiences?
Aloha HS Swim Team Meeting
Host Family Needed
A nonprofit organization called ETC (Education, Travel and Culture) has a 15-yr old boy from China in 10th grade at Aloha High School who needs a new host family. The family must either live in AHS boundary or have a child at AHS. He is very easy-going and friendly. His English is not perfect but it is pretty good. He can easily communicate, understands most things he hears, and is eager to learn more English words and expressions. Please see flyer below for additional information.

2018-19 School and District Report Cards
School and district report cards for the 2018-19 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). We welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
At the International School of Beaverton WE are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. During the year we will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success.
If you have questions about our report card or would like a print copy, please contact us. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them! Thank you!
¡Muchas gracias!
Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When the weather outside gets inclement, school schedules could be affected. The District generally makes inclement weather decisions by 5:15 a.m., posting them by 5:30 a.m. on the District website and on social media. All Portland Metro area media outlets are also notified and announce the information on TV newscasts and online. Parents and guardians that have opted in for SchoolMessenger will receive timely notifications.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability of parents and students to drive safely; and the ability of students to walk safely. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. (As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.)

El Distrito toma sus decisiones basándose en la habilidad de operar los autobuses escolares de manera segura; la habilidad que los padres y estudiantes puedan conducir sin ningún riesgo y la habilidad para que los estudiantes puedan caminar sin peligro.
