Getting Ready For Lineville Intermediate School – (Grade 5 and new Intermediate school students)
8:30-12 noon each session. Please sign up for only 1 session. August 20th OR August 21st.
Where will my locker be located? How do I work a combination lock? What classes will I be taking? Will I be able to find my classes without getting lost? Activities will include tours of the intermediate school, practicing locker combinations, learning about the intermediate school structure and schedule. Students will be able to meet most of the 5th grade staff so there is a familiar face and smile on the first day of school.
At 11 o’clock, adults will join students for a Passport experience giving the students more time to practice getting around and show off what they have learned! This time will also be an alternative “Open House” time allowing for parent(s) to meet teachers and everyone to set up their lockers! Using this time eliminates the need to come during the hectic district Open House night. Students will get a head start and feel much more comfortable transitioning to the Intermediate School by taking this class. (Students should enroll in only 1 session).
April Lunch menu
Let’s Talk! with Mrs. VanAsten and Mrs. Heim, Speech-Language Pathologists
It’s finally here! Warm(er) weather, sunnier days, and sometimes rainy (and snowy!) ones too. As the old saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” About those flowers and showers…..they rhyme! Rhyming, along with sound identification, sound segmentation, and sound blending, are some of the foundational phonological awareness (P.A.) skills students build upon literacy with. While some children seem to learn these P.A. skills simply by listening to stories, reciting the alphabet, etc. other’s need more direct instruction and lots of opportunities to practice. You can easily incorporate these P.A. skills into everyday activities with your child. Talk about words that rhyme (or “sound the same at the end”); begin with one word (“cat”, for example) and provide another word that rhymes with it (“mat”, “sat”, bat”, etc.). Next, give two words and ask your child, “Do these words rhyme? Cat - hat”. Developmentally, children will be able to identify whether or not words rhyme before they will be able to provide a partner rhyme for a given word. Once your child is successful in identifying whether or not words rhyme, take turns coming up with other words that rhyme with it. Even nonsense words are okay (bat, rat, tat, etc.)! As your child progresses in their writing, help them spell their words by stretching out the sounds they hear (c--a--t). When you are reading together, ask your child to read a few of the simpler words that sound the way they look (at, cup, hop, for example). Help them blend their sounds together until they say the word as a whole. When they are struggling, letting them know that you are proud of them for trying their best will help build their confidence. Offer gentle assistance to help guide them in the right direction. And when they DO get it, congratulate them for a job well done! Having a good P.A. skill set will help your child grow as a reading and a speaker.
As always, thank you for being an active participant in your child’s learning!

Live too far away? Consider parking on a closer side street and biking from there. Stay tuned for more updates!

A note from your School Board Representative
From your School Board
New Board of Education Members
On April 2, 2019, Scott Jandrin and Jason Potts became the newest elected members of the Howard Suamico Board of Education.
The decision to run for a seat on the Board of Education reflects a commitment to public service and dedication to democracy. A choice to serve in this manner is particularly significant because locally elected officials are closer to the individuals they represent than other policymakers. Public schools carry out one of society’s most important tasks - educating students to become productive, responsible, civic-minded adults who prosper and serve.
As a school board member, one must balance the interests and values of children, parents, teachers, administrators, taxpayers, business leaders, and retirees among others in our school district. Performed with sincerity and thought, service on a school board is a vital public service.
The mission of the Howard-Suamico School District Board of Education is “to enact policies and allocate resources to develop all students’ full academic potential and to promote their social and emotional growth.” Therefore, it is desirable that our board of education consists of members who:
❖ Are visionary and able to create alternate futures
❖ Are conceptual thinkers
❖ Grasp the big picture
❖ Are connected to District ownership
❖ Demonstrate moral courage
❖ Can work within a group setting
❖ Accept and use authority
❖ Can allow others to lead
The HSSD Board of Education appreciates outgoing school board members, Mark Ashley and Maria Lara’s dedicated service. Our school district is truly a better place because of their investment of time and talents.
