Online Safety
As Humble ISD has temporarily transitioned to a distance learning approach, we must take some time to look at our online safety and digital fingerprint. Please take a moment to visit our Digital Citizenship Page to access resources that can be used to elevate the discussion about our online safety during these unprecedented times. There are also great extensions to add to your web browsers that can help block certain sites like the Kids Safe Web extension on Google chrome.

Our teachers have put in place some extra added level of controls when conducting class zoom meetings and have set guidelines to engaging in these meetings. Please continue the conversation with your child to remind them of the expectations.

Social Studies News
7th Grade Texas History - This week in Texas History we will continue to create primary sources by documenting how the COVID 19 Virus is affecting our daily lives. Students are able to decide how they choose to document history. Encourage students to try to include new items in their journal. They can call family, friends, and fellow students to conduct a survey to include in their journal.
Students will also have an opportunity to explore the conditions that motivated the need for the U.S. Constitution through an episode of Liberty Kids.
8th Grade U.S. History - The lesson for the upcoming week in U.S. History will focus on Women’s Rights and Suffrage during the 19th Century. It has only been 100 years since women obtained the right to vote in the United States. Which in the grand scheme of History, is not that long ago. The fight for these rights began even earlier in U.S. History. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony fought for these rights, but never had the chance to partake in them will be the main focus for next week. Students will be given a variety of videos to watch which will give them a creative outlook on what so many women and their supporters fought for for future generations of women and young girls.
RELA News

We will talk about minerals, the Rock Cycle, and discuss rock formation during our Zoom lessons. It is great seeing all the students during our zoom lessons!
7th Grade Science- This week we will focus on the levels of organization in an ecosystem. Levels of organization in ecology include the population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere. An ecosystem is all the living things in an area interacting with all of the abiotic parts of the environment. Students will complete the choice board found in google classroom which covers this topic. It's great seeing all the students in the zoom meetings! Please email if you have any questions!
8th Grade Science will be finishing the unit on Space with the study on the Electromagnetic Spectrum. We will be discussing how scientists use it to identify the chemical structure of starts. Thank you to the students for showing up to the zoom meetings, it is great to see all of their faces!!
Math News
During this last nine-weeks grading period, our 6-8 math students will be spending a majority of their time on IXL. Our district has received access to this on-line platform which has the ability to offer a personalized learning experience for all students. IXL provides an outstanding, user-friendly experience for students to fill in any gaps in math and support their continued growth. Research supports a positive impact in student skills with only 30 minutes per day in IXL. We highly encourage students to take advantage of this tool to improve their math skills and be ready for next year. In addition, teachers will continue to provide other instructional opportunities through their individual Google Classrooms to ensure we finish the grade level curriculum needed to complete the year. Topics for each grade level for the next week are listed below.
This past week 6th (all), 7th (all) and 8th (OL only) assigned students to work in the diagnostic of IXL. It’s important students spend approximately a total of 60-90 minutes in IXL in the diagnostic so the program can identify each individual student’s skill level in the various strands of math (number operations, algebra, geometry, etc). This time could easily be split into 3-5 seperate 20-30 minute sessions throughout the week. Students that have not had the opportunity to complete the diagnostic should do so as soon as possible. (Directions are linked below)
Refer to WMS’s Continued Learning Hub for additional details on new topics for each grade level. Students should login to their teacher’s Google Classrooms for assignments and also access IXL through their MyHumble account.
Grade Level Topics for the week of April 6th
6th Grade - Area of Triangles
7th Grade - Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramds
8th Grade - Two Step Equations
Algebra - Writing Quadratic Equations
