From The Principal

Dear Sunflower Families,

I hope you are settling into your home/school routines! I appreciate all of you who have sent your feedback to us regarding your experiences. I have shared all the positive comments with staff as well!

Just a reminder that your classroom teachers, as well as specialists (special education teachers, ELL teachers, music, library, speech, PE, art) have specified times for "office hours". These are times they will be available by either email, phone or Zoom to answer questions, trouble shoot things with you and/or provide some extra support to students. You can find staff office hours on our website (see the picture below). I have also linked a copy here.

If your child completes an art, music, library or PE project please send those directly to the specialists via email (emails found on office hours document as well) instead of posting to Seesaw. We are hoping this will cut down on the high number of Seesaw posts.

Finally, we are working really hard to get our 2020-2021 kindergarten students enrolled. If you or you know of anyone who has a child entering kindergarten next school year please encourage them to visit our website and complete their enrollment as soon as possible. We are planning events for our incoming parents and students in lieu of our kindergarten orientation that would have taken place earlier this month. We need students to be enrolled in order to send communication about these events. You can access the online enrollment here and on our website (see picture below).

As always it is an honor to serve as the principal of Sunflower Elementary.

FREE MEALS FOR CHILDREN
Good news! Local restaurants will begin providing free meals to all children under the age of 18 starting tomorrow. This partnership will feed children AND support local businesses. The Lawrence Restaurant Association, other local businesses, The Chamber, the Lawrence Schools Foundation, and community volunteers will join our city and county governments in making this effort possible. Families may access the free restaurant meals for children via curbside pickup from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Monday-Friday at four school sites: Hillcrest and Schwegler Elementary Schools and Billy Mills and Liberty Memorial Central Middle Schools. Again, this free meal service for children begins tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15, and is anticipated to continue weekdays through Friday, May 1.

We applaud this community effort and invite contributions to the Lawrence Schools Foundation to support it. Donations may be made online at www.lawrenceschoolsfoundation.org or by sending a check to the Lawrence Schools Foundation's I C.A.N. Fund at 110 McDonald Drive Lawrence, KS 66044.

MEAL BENEFITS/FEE WAIVERS
Food Service also wants to let families know that the Child Nutrition Program application is now available on our website at https://www.usd497.org/FoodService. This is the same form families eligible for free and reduced-price meals may use to request fee waivers.

AFTERNOON PROGRAMMING/EVENING MEALS
The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence has opened its curbside evening meal service and afternoon online club programming to all school-age children. You may find more information about those services on the club's website: www.bgclk.org.

FREE PARENTING ONLINE CLASS
Our school mental health professionals continue to support students and families. They want to let families know that the Love and Logic parenting online class is free for the month of April. You may access that class at www.loveandlogic.com.
