Let's Build!
Week of September 19-23, 2022
Updates for the Week
We hope that you enjoyed this beautiful weekend. We are calling tonight with the updates for the week of September 19-22, 2022. You can find full details and updates from your child’s teacher by clicking on their name below.
We want to thank you for your support of last week’s book fair and Grandparents’ Day celebrations. Both events were a big success and we appreciate your patience and engagement throughout the week. We will share photos of both events this week.
On Friday, school nurses will be here to do vision screening for all K-5 students. Please make sure to send your child’s glasses to school on Friday if prescribed.
Also on Friday, we will celebrate our first WES Spirit Day of the year. Please wear your green and gold to show your Eagle pride and participate in a friendly competition to see which class has the most spirit. Thanks to PTO for sponsoring this event. Some classes will also celebrate September birthdays on Fridays.
We want to draw your attention to three documents coming home in green folders tomorrow. First, please be on the lookout for information about FIELD TRIPS. This is important communication about field trips, and with 3 grades having field trips next week, it needs your immediate attention.
Next, you will also find a school picture form for those who are interested in ordering pictures. Strawbridge Photography will be here on Wed. Sept. 28 to take pictures of all students for our yearbook. If you’d like to order a package, please return the order form and payment to school or follow directions for ordering online (use online code FM398186 - be sure to use your child's full legal name).
Finally, we’re beginning to work on describing and explaining with our listening and speaking skills this week. There are handy handouts about how you can help with that at home.
We want to alert you in advance that Monday, September 26, there is no school for students due to a teacher workday. We will welcome students back to the nest on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family for your time and energy, and we look forward to another successful week! Have a great evening!
Lunch Menu
Click here for full menus for all WCS.
K-5th graders will have ice cream on Friday. Cost is $1. You can pay online here using your child's ID number (see bookbag tag).
Build Language!
This year, we are working to build reading comprehension skills of all students through speaking and listening. Our routine for the next few weeks is DESCRIBING and EXPLAINING. We are focusing on the skills of naming attributes and using descriptive words like adjectives and adverbs when speaking and listening.
These oral language skills are essential for building language and reading comprehension skills in kids of all ages.
Volunteers Needed!
We are currently seeking future volunteers to serve as chaperones on field trips throughout the year. If you would like to help with a field trip with your child, please see the volunteer form below for how to sign up to be a volunteer at WES. Signing up lasts for 2 years, but must be completed every 2 years.
We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
