Berala News
Term 1 - Week 4 - 2024
We value student voice at Berala PS
This year as members of the SRC we are very excited to be representing Berala Public School.
This year we are looking forward to carrying out our major duties such as putting up the flags, helping our younger students in the school, setting up the sandpit for the K-2 students, hosting assemblies, assisting at Breakfast Club and greeting and thanking visitors that come to our school.
We are most excited about taking part in the Grip Leadership Conference this term and improving on our leadership skills as well as offering suggestions and making decisions about fundraising initiatives for the benefit of our school and wider community. The SRC are really excited to also be a part of our school's 100 years celebration.
We are all very proud and honoured to represent our school and we will make sure we do an outstanding job!

Updates from BPS
Inclusive Education Unit
- I am delighted to advise you that we have commenced our Inclusive Education Unit at Berala Public School in 2024. At Berala Public School, we believe in providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all our students.
- As you may be aware, the demand for placement of students with moderate to high learning and support needs - as defined by the Department's disability criteria - has significantly increased over the past few years. The limited availability of placements in Support Units means that students are unable to access the appropriate support they need. We are excited that we can offer this opportunity to students and their families.
Welcome BBQ, Open Classrooms & Opening of the Inclusive Education Unit
- We look forward to welcoming all our families to the welcome BBQ, Open Classrooms & Opening of the Inclusive Education Unit on Wednesday 28 February. This is a great opportunity to hear about the wondering learning that will be happening across the year and to meet your child's new teacher.
Iftar Dinner
- Iftar holds profound significance in our community, not only as a time to nourish our bodies after a day of fasting but also as a moment for reflection, gratitude, and communal unity. It is a time when families and friends gather around the table, sharing in the blessings of food and fellowship. Iftar will take place on Wednesday 27 March and hosted by Berala Public School.
100 Years of Berala PS Celebration Dinner
- Save the date Tuesday 3 September for a 100 years celebration whole school assembly and dinner. More details to come!
School Sport
- We're excited to announce that our school is trialing a dynamic new approach to sports education, designed to provide opportunities for all students to engage in learning key skills while fostering their overall well-being. Research consistently demonstrates the profound benefits of sports in supporting the holistic development of students. By offering a diverse range of sporting activities and emphasising skill-building alongside traditional competition, we aim to ensure that every student finds a pathway to physical activity that resonates with them. This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusivity and the recognition that participation in sports goes beyond just physical health—it cultivates teamwork, resilience, and confidence. We're eager to witness the positive impact this innovative approach will have on our school community.
NAPLAN
- This term, students will undertake NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN provides schools with valuable information about your child’s learning progress in literacy and numeracy. NAPLAN is only one way we assess student learning in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March in 2024.
School Maintenance
- The refurbishment of the synthetic grass behind A Block has commenced. The ground will be levelled and resurface with synthetic grass. Once completed, this space will provide an extra play area for students.
- The Inclusive Education Unit has been upgraded with a refurbishment of classrooms and playground spaces. We look forward to seeing this finalised this term.
- We are commencing the refurbishment of the K-2 playground. This will involve extensive consultation with students, staff and the community.
Road Safety
You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:
- drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
- never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
- always take extra care in 40km school zones
- follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible
- park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
- never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk
- never do a U-turn or a three-point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
- model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
- always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
- don't park across our neighbours driveways.
P&C Meeting
- The next P&C will be held on Thursday 21 March at 5pm in our school hall. It will be the first meeting and AGM. We will present the school Behaviour Management Plan and Strategic Improvement Plan for 2024. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Attendance
Early Arrivals and Late Pick Ups
At Berala PS, the safety and welfare of our students is the highest priority.
- For the safety of your child, please ensure that they are not at school prior to 8:30am unless attending Camp Australia. There is no teacher supervision prior to 8:30am. Staff will contact the parents of students who arrive prior to 8:30am to discuss alternative arrangements so that we can ensure no student has their safety compromised by being unsupervised.
- If you arrive after 9.15am in the morning, we request that that you walk with your child into the office to sign them into school.
- We understand that from time to time, parents may be a few minutes late picking their child up from school, however this should not be a regular occurrence. Please phone the school office if you are going to arrive after 3:10pm. All gates except the Harrow Road office gate are locked at 3:10pm. If you arrive at school after this time, please present at the front office to pick your child up. Thank you for working with us to help ensure the safety of every student in our school.
- Please encourage your child to wait inside the school gates for pick up so they are safe.
Positive Behaviour For Learning (PBL)
Positive postcards and phone calls are a great way to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of students. By sending positive postcards and making positive phone calls we believe can have a significant impact on students, boosting their self-esteem and motivating them to continue putting forth their best effort. It also helps to build positive relationships between students and teachers, creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
Look out for the positive postcard in the mail!
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework is a whole school program that promotes positive behaviour across the school to help develop safe and supportive environments.
At Berala, we have PBL lessons each week that focus on specific areas of our program. We include lessons on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
Peer friendships are important for children’s personal happiness and social skills training is a way to develop social competence and emotional intelligence. We have been learning ways to get to know people and to look and listen for feelings when interacting with others.
This term we are learning about communicating feelings and stopping bad habits. Students will also be provided with strategies to solve social problems.
These SEL lessons are all supportive of our school rules:
- I am safe
- I am respectful
- I am responsible
- I am a learner
