Tip#9: Vocabulary Development
Words, Words, Words . . . . as you read a story to your child you may come across words that they are unfamiliar with. A great way to increase their vocabulary is to stop and discuss the meanings of these new words. Repeat the sentence that the word is in and discuss how it relates to the story that you’re reading. Also discuss the word and how it relates to their life. Review these “new” words at the end of story. In order to help them truly understand the meaning of this new word use it in a variety of situations and encourage your child to use it as well. They will feel like such “big kids” because they are learning more and more new words!! As always remember our slogan: “Reading 20 minutes before bed really gets your children ahead.”
