BACK TO SCHOOL ISSUE Volume 33 Number 1
QUOTE FOR THE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY
Rick Wormeli, a teacher, consultant, and author, has recently published an article in the AMLE Magazine, entitle, "Energizing Students From Day One." He cautions teachers at the beginning of school to refrain from "the endless succession of going over the rules, filling out forms, and stale getting to know you activities" (Marshall Memo #797).
“Students grow increasingly disillusioned,” says Wormeli. “We’ve missed a golden opportunity for them to dive into the subject material with neurons firing on all thrusters. It’s probably the most significant time of the year to hardwire students’ minds to embrace our subjects, and we don’t want to miss it.”
Update From the Executive Director
Dear Colleagues,
As we transition from summer reflection and planning to “back to school” “critical firsts,” we hope that you will find this edition of the MoASSP Messenger informative, useful, and uplifting as you carry out one of life’s highest callings, that of an educator.

WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES?
With the start of a new school year, it is time to review the basics, foundational principles that will serve you well for the next 180 days or so, I promise. Before the start of the school year in 2008, my administrative team landed on what we called our "non-negotiables."
- A mindset of success. Expect success. What we do here is important. You can do it.
- Never give up on students.
- Move from rules to relationships.
- Integrity. We live in a glasshouse.
- Positivity.
- Mastery for teaching and learning.
Dr. Mike Rutherford nationally recognized speaker, and author calls them "rules for the road" or "core values." Whatever your non-negotiables, rules for the road, or core values are, it is worth the conversation to have with your team and faculty. They will provide you with the compass you need during good times and trying times. They will be the standard by which you lead your school. They will be your "True North."
STATE BOARD MEETING IS THIS TUESDAY
Doug and I will be headed to Jeff City on Tuesday for this month's State Board Meeting. Click here for the agenda.
INVITE A MISSOURI LEGISLATOR TO YOUR SCHOOL THIS FALL
As you begin the school year, think about inviting your legislator to your school for a visit. The fall is an excellent time to start or strengthen a relationship with your elected official(s). You will help to educate them on important issues before the legislative session begins in January. Having them interact with staff and students will also provide essential insights for them. As they deliberate on educational issues during the legislative session, they will reflect on their visit to your school. FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR: Enter your home or school’s address for a list of state and federal legislators in your area. Write a letter or email inviting them to visit your school. If needed, follow up with a phone call. Our MoASSP office will assist you in scheduling and coordination. Call us at 573-445-5071. Once you have them scheduled, please share with us.
NEW MISSOURI LAWS IMPACTING EDUCATION
BUDGET
- $3.55 billion to fully fund the foundation formula used to support Missouri’s K-12 public schools, an increase of about $60 million from the previous state budget year.
- $108 million to fund K-12 public school bus transportation costs – a $5 million increase from the last fiscal year.
SCHOOL START DATE
- Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, local school boards do not control their school start date. The new law pushes back the start date for public schools to no sooner than 14 days before the first Monday in September. That means the school year cannot start until August 24 in 2020 and August 23 in 2021.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS
- School districts have a new requirement to implement criminal background checks on certain volunteers before they're left alone with students or can access student records.
- School districts must share information on former employees who violate local policies against abuse of students.
- Public schools must contact applicants' past school districts, if applicable, and request that information before hiring them.
TRAUMA-INFORMED EDUCATION
- With the start of the 2020 school year, school districts are to conduct trauma-informed education on sexual abuse to students in grades six and higher.
- The professional development must include guidelines on how to recognize and report abuse, and where victims can go for help.
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon
