A Note from the Principal

Dear SPB Families,

The excitement is building as we prepare for Walkathon 2019 next Friday, October 18! We are so grateful to our PTO for organizing this event, and thank you in advance to all of our families who support it in any way. It is a wonderful community builder, and we hope to see many of you there.

We are very grateful to Girl Scout Cadette Troop 71272 for raising money to purchase and install a Buddy Bench on our playground. The concept of the Buddy Bench is to foster friendship and inclusion on the playground and during recess activities. The sixth grade troop even created a video to introduce the Buddy Bench to the student body which was broadcast today during morning announcements. As a result of their efforts, the troop earned their Bronze Award. We congratulate them on this achievement, and we sincerely thank them for leading a project that promotes empathy and kindness among our students!

There are a number of important items in your child's communication folder today, including his/her MAP testing results. A Quick Reference sheet is also included that explains different parts of the report. In addition, there is a letter with information about Exact Path, a new online program our students will be using that integrates with MAP. We are excited to have our students begin using the Exact Path program.

Tomorrow our teachers will be participating in diocesan professional development related to the grading process which means there is no school for our students on Friday, October 11. I hope you enjoy the three day weekend with your families!

Diane Raguz, Principal

Good luck, Brain Brawlers!

Best wishes to the two teams who will represent Saint Paschal Baylon School in Brain Brawl

IX at St. Ignatius High School this Saturday, October 12. Thirty-two teams from across the

diocese will be competing in this academic event. Team members include eighth graders

Nora Carlton, Sean Fioritto, Lilly Jarc, Colin Mooney, and Ella Slemc as well as seventh graders Abby Detzel, Eva Ko, Tony Palmisano, Zac Titas, and Concetta Yormick. Our thanks to Mrs. Krogman who serves as the team coach.

School Pictures

Your child's school pictures are in today's communication folder. Picture re-take day is Tuesday, October 22. If your child missed picture day, please call or email the school office to request a picture flyer. Should you wish to have your child's picture re-taken, please return the entire packet on October 22 with the reason for the re-take. Thank you.

Walk-a-Thon 2019

Walk-a-Thon 2019 is almost here! Our entire school community will be walking a course around our neighborhood next Friday, October 18th. T-shirts for sponsoring families will be going home early next week. If you haven't already, please get your family permission slips turned in! All students are invited to participate in the walk, even if they did not participate in the fundraising portion of this event. Student who have the 2019 Walk-a-Thon t-shirt may wear their t-shirt and dress down. All other students may wear their gym uniform that day. Thank you for helping to make this a successful FUNdraising event!

Looking Ahead to Halloween

There are so many opportunities for our students to enjoy Halloween including the Parish Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 20. As a school community, we are asking that parents do not send in any candy treats for Grades K-8. We are aware that your children will receive candy in many other places. Should a teacher need help with a Halloween celebration, he or she will give room captains a call for whatever is needed. Check next week’s Family Newsletter for information about Student Council activities for students in Kindergarten-Grade 2.

In previous years, we shared the following list as a way to focus on values at Halloween and feel it is worth repeating. Enjoy.

Ways to Celebrate Your Values on Halloween

  1. Your children can research their favorite saint or the saint they're named after. They could also dress up as their favorite saint for Halloween.
  2. Tell your children that Halloween can be a festive day to kick off the celebration of All Saints Day. We ask the saints—our spiritual ancestors—to pray for us on our own journey to holiness.
  3. At breakfast, recite a short litany of family members who have died and whom you remember in your prayers. After each name, have everyone say, “Pray for us.”
  4. Have fun! Make a special meal for dinner. Here's a quick idea for a healthy meal to offset the abundance of candy. Give each child a paper plate. Put out bowls of olives, cucumbers, radishes, raisins, dried apricots or cranberries, cheese sticks, and cold cuts. Have the kids make faces on their plates with the food. They can make scary faces or funny faces or both. Then everyone gets to eat what they created.

Grade 8 Class Play

Hello SPB Families!

One of the highlights of Eighth Grade at SPB is the Class Play. This year the students will present The Wizard of Oz the weekend of March 6, 7, and 8. This play is a parent-run production, and we need your support. The students are selling Yankee Candle products to raise money for all of the costs associated with production.

The profits from the sale will go to defray play expenses- Let's give the 8th graders a fantastic experience!

  • Yankee Candle offers two ways to sell: catalog and online. 40% of every sale goes to us! This weekend only, 50% of every sale goes to us!
  • Here is the link for online catalog and online purchasing: www.yankeecandlefundraising.com . The group number for the SPB 8th grade is 999995461.
  • This link is already active and you can shop whenever you'd like!
  • Over 500 quality products available online and new items through the season from Yankee Candle, Calphalon, Coleman, CrockPot, Oster and many more. Name-brand home products you know and use!
  • Our catalog sale is open now, until October 29.
  • Share the link to the catalog with friends, family, and neighbors! These items make great Christmas gifts and host/hostess gifts. There are products for Fall, Winter, and all year long!
  • Great Products for a Great Cause- The 8th Grade Play!

Playground/Lunchroom Volunteer Sign Ups

Thank you, Grade 7 Parents/Guardians, for signing up for October! Most of the beginning of the month is full, but many days at the end of the month are still waiting for volunteers!

The links for November for Grade 6, and December for Grade 5 can be found below. With the holiday season just ahead, we know that you will want to get the dates that work for your busy schedule!

We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. We are so grateful for the help!

This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.

Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 7, Grade 6, Grade 5.
