Grades
One could make the argument that if a student scored 80 or better on the majority of the assignments, the student surely knows the content and therefore, a couple of low grades could be disregarded and the final grade curved. This is a particularly convincing argument if the rigor of the assignments matches the rigor or assessments given.
Conversely, one can argue the same: The assessment was more difficult in rigor than the assignments and therefore the student did not know the material. However, is that a fair assessment?
Are these valid arguments?
Food for thought:
You have had the majority of your students for 5 six weeks now (except for those semester only classes). You know their ability. Should one or two low grades justify a failing grade?
Attendance Update
Any incentive you can offer for especially for Fridays is appreciated.
Keeping Our Momentum
In the meantime, let's not lose our momentum. Let's continue with our interventions and continue working the plan that has been developed to target specific SEs, Readiness standards and Supporting standards. We have 4 weeks until Round 2.
Suggestion: Pull your benchmark data and export it into an Excel file. Then filter by raw score. Talk to those students who are 5 or fewer questions from Approaching, Meeting or Mastering Grade Level. This pep talk may be all they need. Be sure they know just how close they were to passing the benchmark, which was an actual STAAR test from previous years. (And this was in January when they still lacked a couple of months of instruction!)
Let's keep charging forward.

Student-Led Conferences April 23
Each student should have a file folder portfolio containing samples of their work. These include samples that the students choose and samples that you choose. They might include any charts/graphs illustrating their progress in class, too.
