Rabbit Health Precautions
RHDV2 is being found in rabbits in states surrounding Nebraska. RHDV2 is Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus affecting rabbits. It is being found in wild rabbits and then spreading to domestic rabbits. Symptoms include: loss of appetite, lethargy, high fever, seizures, jaundice, bleeding from nose, mouth, or rectum, difficulty breathing, and sudden death. It can be spread orally, through the nasal, or ocular exposure to the virus, or by blood-feeding insects. To help protect your rabbits this summer limit the time they are outside roaming freely in your yard where they could come in contact with wild rabbits or mosquitos. Best practice is to have rabbits housed indoors. If they are housed outside, double fence to avoid contact with wildlife, place hutches or cages off the ground, and do not use forage, tree branches or grass for bedding from areas with infected wildlife. Avoid collecting outdoor forage or allowing your rabbits to feed on grass in your yard.
Living Room Learning+
Looking for a summer experience that your child can participate in from the comfort of your home? Join Nebraska 4-H in June and July for Living Room Learning+! A hands-on, virtually guided activity will be shared during these live experiences with youth joining from across Nebraska. Each session will use inexpensive, easy-to-find materials. The completed project may be showcased as an exhibit at a local county fair (optional). A career connection to the project will also be made. Sessions will focus on Food + Science and Entrepreneurship + Art. Youth do not need to be 4-H members to participate. The first 25 pre-registrations received for both sessions of this summer’s Living Room Learning+ will receive the Nebraska 4-H Project of the Year educational kit (a $25+ value!) mailed to them for use during Living Room Learning+ in July. Pre-register today at http://4h.unl.edu/living-room-learning!
The sessions will feature the following topics:
- Wednesday, July 7, at 9 am -- Entrepreneurship + Art
If interested in participating on July 7th, we can make a day of it with the Tick Tock workshop in the afternoon. Contact the office to register and then bring your lunch!!
