Focus: Teaching Problem Solving
Did you know that in addition to supporting children in the moment when problems (or conflicts) arise, that we also must intentionally TEACH all children HOW to solve problems?
The below resources can be used by all Early Childhood Classrooms, regardless of funding source or curriculum model. We hope you find them as a useful addition to your classroom!

EC PBIS Best Practices at a Glance: Problem Solving
- Staff support children as they work through the problem-solving process in naturally occurring situations.
- Staff engage children in generating their own solutions to common classroom problems.
- Staff explicitly teach problem-solving steps using visuals.
- Staff provide visual reminders about problem-solving steps or possible solutions.
- Staff note problem situations AND use those as examples during group situations to talk about how to problem solve.
- Staff comment AND recognize children who have been “good problem solvers.”
- Staff help children reflect on their own use of problem solving. ("Did it work?")
- Staff individualize instruction on problem solving based on children’s individual needs.
Classroom Resources
Problem Solving: Visual Solutions
Teaching teams should select the visuals that work for their own classrooms. Each possible solution should then be intentionally introduced (and taught) to children. Staff should refer back to the visuals when discussing classroom problems with the whole class and in the moment.
